Looking at upgrading my scope and been reading about reticle and not sure which one is the best for hunting.

I hunt deer and moose in Ontario, so distances are not huge.

Advice? Comments?

Thanks

I bought a scope a while back with a German #4 style illuminated dot and it is nice! I can turn it on when the light is bad or leave it off and the dot shows black. The dot is 1 moa.

I also hunt in ONT where I don't shoot anything at any great distances, and really like Leupold's heavy duplex offering. The H.D in a lower powered scope (1.75-6) works great for running game, and is better early morning/late evening as the X-hairs are easier to see.

I have a B&L 1.5x6 on my main gun. It's very light & compact, while the 6x works nice when playing at the range. Sometimes wish I had the illuminated reticle option for those last few minutes of shooting light but can't justify the cost.

I like the B&C enough that all I want to buy anymore. It doesn't weigh anything to have along and you don't have to use it if you don't want to. I doubt that I'll be swapping out all my old standard duplexes though, they got me this far.

As already stated - standard "Duplex" is probably all round best. I also use and like the German #1 and #4 shown in Can-Down's excellent photo.

Illuminated dots are great in the right application - I think they work best with a very low power scope when you can keep both eyes open or in heavy brush when the reticule gets lost in the tree branches.

I only have an "ESD" (simple Redfield with excellent intensity adjustment) so not sure how an illuminated reticlue helps with a higher power scope. I would imagine if it was too bright your iris would contract a little defeating the purpose .... would be worth trying to trial one in your situation to see how it might help. I have used a 6x,42 with a non illuminated thick picket and it provides all the image you might need even well after legal light.

It would help last minutes of the day when you can see the deer fine but when you background is a dark treeline the crosshairs disappear.

I use a heavy duplex for my main deer rifle in Ontario. Ranges can exceed 300 yards, but I won't shoot that far. I recently accidentally bought a Redfield with their accurange reticle, and I like it alot. Not overly busy and that little dot comes in handy for my .22

I like B&C's, varmint and fine duplex.

For my meat gun, I have B&C with 2.5-8x. It is set at 2.5x 90% of the times. This season I turned it up 8x for a long shot - best of both worlds.

Leupold scope are very good, though not the best. They stand the test of time! :)
