Hi CGN'ers....Looking for a new varmint rifle and I'm not sure what direction to go. I like Savage, and I've been hearing allot of good things about Tikka. I think the caliber will be a 22-250. Is the Winchester Coyote outback any good? It will most likely be stainless.

Any feedback would be great.

Rick.

I have a savage stainless weather warrior in 22-250 and love it.If you like synthetic stocks and stainless its pretty hard to beat the model 16.

Can't say enough about the tikka t-3. They all shoot good, easy to find mounts nd spare mags. Nice and light. Great user adjustable trigger. You should be able to get a stainless varmint for under a $ 1000 as well.

Cheers,

I have a coyote outback in 22-250 and its a nice and accurate rifle. Its just the right weight for a walking varmint rifle imo.

yes heavy barrel......true varmint.

I strongly recommend a Tikka T3 Varmint. Amazing rifle and extremely accurate. You will not be disappointed.

EDIT: I notice you are in NB; If you would like to try my T3 Varmint, drop me a pm. Mine is in 6.5x55, not in the caliber you want, but at least you will be able to feel the action of the rifle and see how it fits you.

I have a Remington in 223 (with a jobber stock), a Savage Max1 and a standard Weatherby S2. They are all great.

Your best bet is to go down to the store. Pick out a rifle which suits your tastes and then a scope. Add the two costs together and be happy if under a $1,000. If over and you are prepared to pay...then you are still happy.

Either way, you won't lose!

Hard to beat the T3 Varmint...
A buddy got the Savage Predator model with medium weight barrel in 22-250 for XMAS couple years back....great shooter. He loves it. His last and only new gun is a Sako m75ss 300WM he bought when I got mine (identical). The Savage has asloppy action but sure shoots the lights out with factory ammo.

X2!
Also have a T3 Varmit in 22-250. Unreal Accurate!

Many years ago some guy called Jack said something about the Winchester Model 70 being the "rifleman's rifle". A whole lotta years later, it's pretty hard to argue with that now that the latest production runs seem to be putting out the best Model 70's ever. We have lots of choice these days, from silly cheap (Stevens) to silly expensive. But for a well-built hunting rifle under $1000, I think the Model 70 has a lot to be said for it. And if you don't agree, you don't know Jack! ;)

I got myself a CZ550 Lux in 22-250. I truly love the rifle and was able to get it under a grand. I know its not the Varmit rifle you explained but they do make one called the Varmit Kevlar. I dont know the price of them but if they have anything in common with the 550Lux your getting alot of rifle for your money. The think I like about the CZ is the Craftsman ship is second to non. Relaible Mauser 98 action and a removable magazine. Hold 4 shots plus 1 in the Chamber. Will hold 1/4 inch groups and under at 100yrd. I cannot say anything bad about the CZ rifles.

My father also shoots 22-250 for coyotes and my second choice would be his rifle.. a Tikka T3. they shoot well and are easy to carry from stand to stand. Mount a good scope, throw some 40 or 50 gr v max in the chamber and it will shoot excellent. The Bolts have to be the smoothest on the market. And for an extra 80 bucks pick up a 5 round magazine and your cookin with gas.
Just my 2 cents.. if your into reloading send me a pm and i can share some load data with you that i have had excellent luck with on coyotes. no pelt damage and knockes em dead

Thanks for the input guys.... I'm kinda leaning towards the Tikka. Wonksy is your 22-250 the laminate stock, I checked and the Varmint heavy barrel comes with the synthetic stock. I'm not crazy about plastic stocks, but I guess that could be replaced.

For a new rifle under 1000 my vote goes to the tikka T3. Many of the rifles discussed certainly have their virtues but one thing that is not often discussed is how well a hunting rifle functions. This goes beyond accuracy. The truth is most rifles produced today are more then accurate enough for their intended purpose. What I like about the tikka beyond their accuracy is how well the bolt cycles, the crispness of the trigger and one often overlooked thing is the 60 degree bolt lift. Some might say that it's a trivial feature but it contributes to a very reliable and smooth cycling action that is not equaled by any other rifle at that price point. I'm not a big fan of plastic trigger guards, magazines and bolt shrouds but lets face it the plastic seems to function fine.

One other thing to consider when on a budget buying a rifle is to buy used. There have been times for me when I was looking at buying another rifle but didn't want to spend the kind of money it takes for what I like. This spring I was looking for another hunting rifle because I used my normal rifle for a doner action on a custom target rifle. After spending lots on the custom rig there wasn't much left over for a new hunting rifle. I took my time and watched the EE and my local paper and eventually found a very nice sako A5 in 30-06 for $600. Very high quality and a good shooter. I would take that rifle over any new rifle under the $1000 price point.
