What's your budget?

Rem, Savage and Tikka all have heavy barrel 308 rifles that would fit your description. Depends on what you want to spend.

You can start at a $700 SPS varmint and go all the way up to a $1600 Tikka Tactical with a $1300 Savage F-TR in the middle.

Take your pick.

the tikka t3 sporters have dropped in price this year, i was talking to a local gun shop here and the owner said i could get one for 1400, i looked at one at wholesale and they still list it for almost $1800

worth looking into,

for 1200 the savage f/tr looks sweet, im getting one this year when i can find one

I agree. Very hard to beat the Savage m12 target rifles at their price point.

I think what the intended use is makes a difference. I have an Accuracy International AI AE MKII that beats a custom Remington(Rem 700 action, Rock Creek Barrel, A-5 stock, action trued, bedded etc etc) that I have. The AI is just as accurate as the Remington and is by far much more reliable in less than favourable conditions. This is obviously from personal experience. I realized after, the price range but as the title said, best out of the box rifle. I think for its intended purpose, the AI is hard to beat.

I like my Remington milspec r5. Bed it into the stock and get it an aftermarket trigger.

Either a Remington 700 SPS Tactical or the Remington 700 Varmint, depending on what barrel length you prefer. Buy a good quality trigger and a good quality stock. From there Optics wise I would recommend the Leupold MKIV with a Warne/Nightforce/Leupold Base, and a set Nightforce/Leupold Rings.
