best rifles in .308?

Target: Remington 700 5R. Hunting: Remington 700 Mountain SS. Have both. Love both. They don't shoot as well as $10,000 custom rigs but I can't think of better rifles for the money.

Howa 1500 Alpine for hunting, Tikka M 55 Varmint for target and an old ancient Mod.17 Bisley rifle worked over by Fulton of England.
All do exceptionally well with their respective loads..

Mr. Friendly: The Benchrest shooters normally shoot the first Sunday of the month except when the Fall Rifle Sight in occurs.
Check the calendar at your club. There is a True Benchrest class as well as a hunter class.
The club website lists the emails of the principles.

While I don't own it anymore, I had a SWEET Tikka T3 Sporter in 308 (I wish I hung on to it)

Another vote for the R700 5R for target duty on a budget. Hunting? R700, Tikka, Browning, Sako, Kimber, Win 70, TC...whatever feels right to you.

Tc venture for hunting rifle.....I picked one up used and accuracy is unreal. Average sub 1/2 moa groups with hornady Superformance

The Venture is not my first choice, but I have to back you up on this. These rifles are real sleepers and can be picked up cheap.

Long range would likely be a M700 variant
Hunting rifle would be a Ruger scout

some people speak pretty highly of the accuracy to be had from sporter versions of the Sako model 75 and the Tikka/Ithaca M55/LSA55 in .308.

(somewhere I read of a Finn who did pretty well in competitive matches with stock hunting model 75)
