best round for moose with the lowest recoil

Well.....I do not like the question. Hunting alone, calls for the heaviest cartridge, you can handle. With group of hunting friends, you can ease off a little. Yukon and PEI residents, will have difrent opinions too. Nobody can predict outcome of hunt. Let say, you going for moose, and see, let say blacktail in the bush, you kill one, and next minute big mama brown bear, with two grown cubs, charge you, to reposes the dear. Trust me, if you have 7mm/08 in your hands, don't even think, to start the war. Even single bull moose, during rut, will have no problem, to kill you, depending on distance, and your schooting skill. So guys, stop recomending pea schooters. Start seeing bigger picture. Personally, nothing, absolutly nothing, gives me more confidence, than my 35 WHELEN.

:agree: But, I don't know about your experience with firearms, But for someone new to shooting and sighting in a new rifle with some power, a Flinch can develop which can't help. I will say that the 6.5x 55 would be a good choice, But Really, the Best for someone new to shooting would be the Old Winchester 308 " For Many reasons !!! Best All Round Caliber" Made........... My rifle, 300 Winchester Mag with 180 gr Nosler Partition hand loads. Blows them off their feet :D Jack

A bunch of calibers will work for moose. I shot my first two moose with a .243 and 105 grain Speer bullets... the next couple with a 6.5 x 57, a 25-06 and some with a 7mm 08...

one shot, two steps and down...

Wow, I was just about to ask if a 7mm-08 is adequate for moose (else it will be a 308 or a 458 Lott from there....). Here's to hoping my buddy gets his antlered moose tag this year...

7mm-08,308,303 British any of these will work well!! you dont need a cannon to kill a moose!! but i think your best bet would probably be the 308 win because i have never seen ammo for 7mm-08 in any hunting store in corner brook not sayin you wony find it but unless u reload it wont be cheap to get it shipped from cableas, or any other gun store not on the island but there is plenty of 308win ammo at canadian tire and walmart!

lol and there are no Grizzlies in Newfoundland so guys he dosnt need a Cannon!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember a young fellow from Newfoundland giving me lessons on Moose Calling in a Busy gas station in Prince George one day, I almost pissed myself ;) Yes, another reason for the 308 Win. You can get ammo every where !!!

375 H&H, you can get ammo anywhere(globally) if that is the only criteria. I love mine, but that recoil thing, oh yeah.
I'll go out on a limb here. ANYTHING 35 caliber and under with a muzzle break will shoot well, not recoil to heavily and with the downside, severe muzzleblast. My wife is 5'4" 125lbs and shot a 30-378 wby with 200 grn bullets @ 3250 like nothing. Albeit, she shoots a 7mm STW and 375 ICL Kodiak(H&H improved) without a brake too.....Sorry she is NUTZ. Maybe this isn't helpful, but a brake will tame alot of rifle until the weight moving creates the recoil like in a 378 wby or bigger bore.

Stand guns - T/C Icon in .300 Winchester Magnum with a Bushnell 3200 2.5 - 10X scope
OR
customized (Timney trigger) Ruger Model 77 in .300 Winchester Magnum with Bushnell Trophy 3 - 9X scope ("el cheapo" but puts meat in the freezer).

Bush gun - customized (Timney trigger) Remington Model 7 .308 Win. (18.5" bbl.) with 2 - 7X Leupold scope.

Fly-in (pack sack) gun - Browning Take Down BLR (Japanese mfg. unfortunately) .308 Win. with Leupold 2 - 7X scope mounted with Warne detachable rings. This gun is useless with anything heavier than 168 grain bullets. Groups like a shotgun with ANY 180 grain bullets I've tried.

.30-06 .308 .303 are good for anything on the North American continent, and most soft skinned game in Africa.

I'll be taking my NL moose with 7.62x54R and a steel buttplate. Although I'm sure something a little lighter is out there. :)
