Hey guys whats your opinion on the best scope for a ruger number 1?

its a 303 and I do like the open sights for hunting with it but im thinkin of putting on QR rings? and a little scope on it, would proberly prefer Leuopold but am open to suggestions? in the VX2 price bracket so say up to $500 I would be happy with spending. (I know $ aint a $ but itl do for interest sake)

I wont need a lot of Magnification, thinkin up to 5 would be enough?

Was looking in the Ruger 1 thread an it made me think about it some more.

Will QR, will it hold Zero-ish ?

Thanks fellas

I think you answered your own question, a Leupold 1.5-5X is the answer. That was the glass I mounted on a #1 in .416 Rigby, but I didn't like how the factory quarter rib positioned the scope, so I had a custom quarter rib made up, inletted for Talley QD rings. The change put the ocular of the scope even with the front of the falling block to ensure I wouldn't get tagged, regardless of the position I fired from, and equally important considering its use, the loading ramp was unencumbered. I've had Talley QDs on a couple of different rifles, and found they hold their zero pretty well. The disadvantage was that this scope position prevented me from using more than 3X magnification if I was to have a full sight picture, but you wouldn't have that concern with a rifle chambered for the .303. If a 2-7X was available, where a 1.5-5X wasn't, I wouldn't turn it down if the price was right.

Whether a 1-4X is better choice that a 1.5-5X depends on you. Chances are though, there isn't much that could be done with one, that couldn't be done as well with the other. Is there a target you'd be able to see at 5X that you couldn't see at 4X? In heavy cover, is a 1X any faster or any brighter than a 1.5X? I'd be surprised if an argument could be strongly made for one over the other.

I've long been an advocate of variable low power scopes on big game rifles, and generally consider big scopes a mistake, but I read something a while back that gave me pause. If your quarry is standing in the shade of a tree, against the back ground of a thick dark trunk, and you attempt to shoot in brilliant sunlight, a low power scope might not allow you to see it. !!?? Mind you, given the opportunities I've missed because I had too much magnification dialed into the scope, still has has me favoring lower than higher magnification, but it does show that there is more than one way to look at things.

The low power Leupold would be an excellent choice...The Issue with Ruger 1s is getting scope far enough rearward for proper relief. One ore even two Ruger Extension rings will do it.

I mounted a Leupold fixed 3 power in my 375 WM, the sight picture is just 'there' when the rifle is shouldered.
My No. 1 in 7mm Rem Mag has a Luepold variable (2.5 × 7 ?) that requires craning your neck to get focused.
The scout/pistol scope works well on the big stick, but the more powerful glass is required on the 7mm is not friendly to a fast, instinctive shot that is for sure.

Bushnell elite 6500 1.25-8x32. Long eye relief(6in) but you need the bigger rings. I have also used a 2-7 leupold ultimate slam that works well for eye relief.

You know what I'm going to say, don't you? 1-4x Leupold or 1.5-5x Leupold with my tendencies leaning toward the 1.5-5x. There are QR rings available though I think the standard Ruger rings QR pretty quickly with a quarter (or whatever mid-sized coins you banana benders use).

Look around on the EE. One of your kind Canadian friends might be able to hook you up with the scope at a more reasonable price than you can get down there.

I had a 1.5-5 Leupold on my Ruger #1 303 and as far as I'm concerned it was the perfect combination.
Plenty of eye relief and with QD rings it held zero very well.
They are an excellent, rugged scope. I have them on my 375, 404 and several other rifles.

My aught six International wears a Leupold FX II 4x33 scope in Ruger standard (low) rings; its the cat's pyjamas for eye relief and cheek weld for me. I prefer fixed power scopes for their simplicity and toughness.

I used the Leupold VX-II 1-4X20mm on a No.1 S .45/70 and a No.1 S 9.3X74R and was not a fan... I changed them to VX-2 2-7X33mm and was much happier with the overall performance and ergonomics... I use the 4BO scope ring in the rear position to solve the eye relief issue.

My No.1-RSI .243 & 7X57's wear the VX-2 Ultralight 3-9X33mm scopes;

I picked up an older long tube leupold 4x for my 300wm. It worked for eye relief as well. I think i paid $175cdn for it iirc.
This ^^

The top scope in the pic is a older Leupold M8 4x. They are much longer, give more flexibility in position and are a good deal to boot. Shown with Weaver Classic and Leupold FXII 4x for comparision.

That would work fine, but I personally prefer a compact optic with the 4BO ring... it looks more proportionate on the No.1-A/S/T versions.

I put a burris short mag on my #1 45/70 it's a real nice combo, the thing I liked the most was the really long eye relief, it made the pkg work just right for me.

How would one of these Go for a really budget setup? have you ever heard of this scope?

its a 2.5x power which might not be too bad at all?

yes its cheap... budget it is... a bit out of place on a Ruger1 we all agree but putting that aside.
