I need to scope a husqvarna 7mm rem mag that I am picking up for hunting season this year. It is meant to be an all-round rifle and I have 200$ to spend on a scope, I am aware that this limits my options consideably but what are the best options out there within my budget either new or used. In addition suggestions on rings and bases would also be appreciated.

Keep an eye out in the exchange forum for a used Leupold Rifleman, a Bushnell 3000/3200, or one of the good (read older) Weavers. These are medium quality, but reasonably good, for the money. You may have to stretch your budget a tad, but there's no sense spending any money on really crap glass. FWIW - dan

Mueller Optics get fairly good reviews. I have two of their 'APV' series, and the glass is very good for the price.

PM White Falls on here, as he is the dealer in Canada.

If 200 is all you have then there are 2 Bushnell options, that are " recommended" for center fire rifles. The Trophy is your first choice at around $149.00 and the Legend series at around $199.99. There was another thread here some where, that was extolling the virtues of Banner scopes on center fire rifles, and they are less exp. FS

+2 on the beer cans. I got an elite 3200 3-10 40x. That extra power does give you good reach, and for $300 i couldnt complain on my 300wsm. There's always this scope, then a few more bucks and you get this, and a few more...... Then you end up getting a freaking mark 4 haha. Spend all you can on the glass, and cry one and only once.

Buy a good used Leupold 4 power and don't look back.

There are probably a dozen guys here who have one they could sell you for $200 plus shipping, and the scope will be more than enough for all your hunting.

Think about this for a moment. A 4X scope makes an animal 400 yards away appear to be 100.

You wouldn't have any trouble hitting at 100 yd with iron sights, where you are trying to focus on a rear sight, a front sight and the animal at 100, all at the same time, an optical impossibility.

A scope puts everything in the sight picture on the same plane, so all you have to do is paste the reticule onto the target, hold and shoot.

I have shot and seen shot, a lot of big game at very long range with a straight four. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions and keep them coming,

I am looking into many of them. I am considering a fixed 4X although this is a long range cartidge and I feel I may be limiting it's capabilities with 4X magnification as although I realize this may be all I need why not have a litlle more. I think I am leaning toward either the rifleman or the Bushnell 3200 in 3-9X but have not made up my mind. I am looking into the trophy, banner and Mueller scopes as well.

I appreciate that you guys are giving suggestions within my budget. It seems incredibly common in this type of thread for guys to suggest that someone save for the high end scopes despite a stated budget. It doesn't take much thought to just point someone toward the best scopes on the market. Some of us just don't have the extra pennies and thanks for helping me out with info on this lower end stuff.

I bought a Bushnell 3200 3-10X40mm last spring for 250$ at lebaron in Montreal... I waited until they had a "NO TAXES" sale and got a good deal.

sometimes an extra 50$ will go a long way....;)

There is nothing like holding a scope in your hand and looking through it. Take the advice here and then find a store with a decent selection and start comparing. For the potential of long shots I am partial to 3x9x40. In the bush
1.5x5x32.

Don't forget that there are many reticle types out there to choose from as well.

As for bases and rings, I have been happy with Leupold. Good luck.

This was going to be a PM sorry!

My vote is with a used M8 4x, or 6x if you want a bit more magnification. 99% of ethical shots on big game are within the reach of a quality 4x scope. The shooter is almost always the limiting factor, not the scope. (Definately true in my case.)

After the season is over, you'll have a scope that will work well on on any gun you own.

Even IF the Bushnell Elite and Leupold Rifleman are comparable in quality, you get good aftersale service for a lifetime with Leupold, and service that sucks with Bushnell.

There are many things I cannot afford; one of them is a cheap scope.
