Hey guys I am completely new to the scope world and I'm worried I will buy the wrong one. I have been searching but keep getting mixed reviews, its killing me. I am currently going to get a 700 R5 and I wont be hunting, primarily precision shooting and want the right scope for me. I know I am not going to be able to pop off 1000 yd targets on my first day. My dilemma with starting small (buying a cheaper/lower range scope) is that I am the type that prefers to buy something better than what my skills need and learn off of it so when I gain the skill I wont have to go buy a new scope and waste more money....if that makes sense. I want a scope that enables me to hit as far as this caliber allows me. What scope will be good for me? My budget is preferably $1300 or less.

newb question....i know...thanks for the help and hopefully no sarcastic replies, I'm at the end of my rope when I'm on the forums

Also, so far I have come down to one that I liked but started seeing mixed reviews, wondered if anyone here knew how it was. The scope was a Trijicon AccuPoint 5-20x50.

is this for me or does anyone have any other recommendations, the price tag is about a grande even. Thanks again

There is a lot of good scopes S&B NF and other, lately i bought a Sightron Big Sky 36X from Mystics Precision (sponsor ) and for the 768.00 shipped to my door i think i got a lot for my money, it is sitting on top of my TC Icon Precision Hunter 6.5 Creedmoor and after 75 shoots with that combo, it show great promess... My 0.02 cents. JP.

I'll also be eagerly awaiting replies since i'm in the market for the same rifle as you.

Being that this is my first non AR style rifle I've been researching scope rings and bases and have found that one can spend several hundred dollars on rings and bases alone.

The rings and base are just as important as the scope. Cheaping out here will likely lead to frustration and disappointment somewhere down the road. Thankfully, the Rem700 SA has many options for both rings and bases. A Nightforce rail and TPS ring package can be had for about $200-250 new, and will be more than adequate for your application.

I have not used a Trijicon Accupoint so I can not comment as to the quality of that optic, in terms of its mechanics or glass.

Sightron seems to have some believers and some non-believers. For the money, they sure seems to have a following (over comparably priced Bushnell Elites, Leupolds, etc). Under $1300 (well, under $1100 when rings and bases are included), I think that anything from an Elite 6500 4.5-30x50 to any number of Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40 to any number of Sightrons might fit the bill. What did you like about the Trijicon over the some of the others I mentioned ?

At this time it is sitting on a Ruger 77 44 but i like it very much on my mr-1 to i swap with my S&B 1.1X4 Short Dot... JP.

The Trijicon TR23 is a great scope for the price. It has glass that is apparently made by the same supplier Nightforce uses, tracks positively and has a great reticule illumination system. The reticule is not as fine as the NF ones which is good if you might want to hunt with it, but not as nice if you plan on very fine target work.

Also vertical adjustment might be a little limited for you at 46MOA. With a 20MOA base you would be able to shoot out to about 800m but it would be close.

good info thank you.

lots of choices.

However at your price point:

I currently have a Zeiss Conquest with 1000 yard balistic plex that works very nicely on the 5R.

Some will say Leupold but I think you can do better for the price.

I have another 5R that needs to be scoped and it will eventually be getting a Sightron SIII 6-24x. The price for these scopes is excellent. By all accounts they are very good scopes and should work perfectly. The newest reticle also looks good. Mystic player ie Mystic precision sells them. This is the route I'll be going in the near future.
