Best scope for bush/compact/frontier/scout gun?

825$, seemed reasonable. MSRP on Ruger website was 936.00 (US I'm assuming) and I remember reading that someone had been quoted upwards of 1100$ in Sault St-Marie.

congrats! and good choice on the .308, its hard to beat for an all-around caliber.
Yep - good one - especially for a non handloader (compared with 338Fed or 358Win - my personal pick).
keep an eye on the EE because they come up from time to time for ~$40 so snagging an extra pair might not be a bad idea.
Very good idea if you want to experiment with a conventional over the receiver scope. Thats what I did with my Target grey Frontier in 358. I prefer it over the scout set up. Ruger rings are exactly 1/8" incremental height jumps. Also stainless rings blend pretty well with target grey gun. Target grey rings in the right height I found difficult to find used.

A good scope for bush hunting is a Leupold 1-4x or 1.5-5x or Burris equivalents, there is not much out there that has their field of view, don't forget that even a 50ft FOV is only 12.5ft at 25yds! the 308 is a great choice.
bigbull

Thanks for the comments. I think I'll be very satisfied with the set-up I got. I'll give myself some time to get used to the scout scope before I consider getting a more conventional scope. I bought this rifle specifically to be able to make those quick shots with relative accuracy, definately not to be a tack driver.

My Target Grey 358 wears a Leupold 1.5 x 5 with the heavy duplex cross hairs and it seems to be a really nice combination.
It put a nice mulie in the freezer last season.

midsouthshooterssupply.com has the leupold FX-II scout scope at $259 US.
ive never ordered from them but when looking for a scope a while back several people PM'd me that they regularly order scopes from them and have no problems with shipping or border issues.

might be cheaper than the $400+ youll pay for the Leupold here. if you do find a good Canadian price on the Leupold let me know please, i actually need another one.

I just ordered one from Wholesale Sports and it is in stock and should have shipped today - $350:

Just out of curiousity, have any of you guys done any customizing or accurizing to your frontiers?

didnt need to... dont mess with a good thing, just go shoot it. with all the slagging of Ruger's accuracy and short barreled rifles, when i took my .308 Frontier to the range the first time i was expecting 3-4" groups... which i wouldnt have slit my wrists over since i bought it as a hunting rifle and not a target gun. i could have lived with that for hunting purposes. that was the same setup as yours - forward mounted 2.5x Leupold Scout scope.

after zeroing it i had my friend - who is a much better shot than i am - shoot the first group. with no mystical bull#@%& break-in/barrel conditioning juju, his first 100 yard group measured .9" -- with cheap $10/box Igman (!!) softpoint ammo. so the rifle can easily outshoot me. my opinion of the Igman ammo also shot up, so i stocked up a couple hundred rounds of that batch.

i believe that the Frontiers have better than average accuracy because the 16" medium contour barrel is much stiffer than the standard light-contour 24" barrel. i dont think you will be disappointed with the accuracy. just leave it alone for now and go shoot some groups.

is there any indication that Ruger will stop making the Frontier? i definitely want to pick up one more before they do, which is why i was asking about the price.

Just ordered one of these from Wholesale myself for my Norinco M1A. Will the Leupold low 1" QRW rings work for this scope? Anyone know?

i use low Leupold QRW rings for a 3-9x40mm Burris scope which is a lot bigger than the Leupold Scout, so i would say they should fit.

i would advise against the QRW mounts however... look into something else. Leupold quality is slipping, bad.
that screw head is not stripped - you do not tighten that screw. thats how they came out of the package. looks like they were made by a 5-year old with fisher price tools.

the heads of all the mounting screws are off-center too, you could really tell when you were tightening down the scope. 2 of them also had heads that were not on at 90-degrees so they wobbled like crazy, i was afraid when they were tightened down the bolt heads would just pop off.
the mounts looked OK, but the heart of any mounting system is the fasteners used to torque it down, and i was sorely disappointed in the quality of these. i wish id have taken a photo of the 8 bolts that hold down the scope, but i had already boresighted it and torqued them down and honestly im afraid to mess with them anymore. considering these are supposed to be quality mounts, and cost me over $80, its sickening. i sent an email to Leupold and they didnt even bother to respond.
im not pleased with the fact that they shipped what looked like mild steel 2-cent bolts with $80 rings.

Thanks for the advice. Le Baron is selling them for $68 plus tax in Ontario (if they have them in stock).

I have had good success with mounting a Bushnell 10x40 Mildot scope to another M1A using the ARMS #22 Throw Lever rings. It's still zeroed when taking off and remounting. The ARMS rings are quite a bit more expensive though and need ring inserts to fit the 1" tube on the Leupold.

ahhh... I see. The lever is on the ring instead of the base. I'm using the ones with the lever on the base for both my muzzle loaders (as shown in the Cabela's listing). I can only say that these Leupold's I have are nothing but excellent, keep their zero well, and very well machined.

i didnt have any issues with the machining of the rings themselves... just the fasteners, they were of horrible quality. the rings are not bad, although to be honest i prefer the ruger rings, which take a tad longer to remove/install with an ordinary coin but dont have these huge sharp levers that snag on clothing.

You can get Warne QD rings for the Ruger.

Super quality.

MBP I agree with you the gun outshoots me. With a 3x9 scope, bench rested, handloads and a Timney trigger i get 1/2 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards. In the field I wont get anywhere near that but its nice to know the gun is not an issue just the shooter...

I didn't really intend to, was just gathering info for future reference. I plan on keeping it as is until I see the need to change things up, that probably won't be for a long time.
