Hey, i'll soon begin building a m40a3 .308, and would like some recommendations on which scope is best for distances 800yds and over. I have a swarovski z5 3.5-18x44 brx, what would you suggest? Thanks

If you are building a M40A3, then it should have a Schmidt & Bender Police Marksman II LP 3–12×50mm scope. ;)

Personally I use a Schmidt & Bender PM - II 5 - 25 X 56mm on my rig. Could not be happier with it !!!!!

If you're building a clone it should have the above mentioned S&B. As for what's the best long range scope? Way to broad of question for anyone to give you a reasonable answer. What's the best scope with X budget for Y application is a good start.

If you get the clone built post pictures :)

I also vote that you come correct with a S&B. Way cooler if it's a completely accurate build.. If funds permit that is.

The highest power Night Force available for long range with a good low power range. 5X25 or higher

S+B Pmii - First Choice $$$$$
NF NXS - Second $$$$
Sightron S3 Third $$$

To get more comprehensive answer you could be a bit more specific about what you want - authenticity Like, how serous are you that the M40 be an accurate representation of the real thing ), target shooting, PRS etc etc

Meanwhile, have a read of this: http://rifletalk.org/2015/04/26/optics-selection-for-the-newer-precision-shooter/

you will see that 85+ % use Nightforce it does not get better than the new Competition Model

Really? Precision Rifle Blog has Schmidt & Bender leading the way in 2014 with 33% of competitors using S&B. Consequently Nightforce ranks 5th tied with Premier Reticles and behind Vortex, Bushnell and USO as well.

I don't think the OP bought an M40A3 to shoot F-class either.

That will change when you see more militaries swapping out their present F1 scopes for the new Nightforce F1 models and in any cases, NF dominates in total of all competition use.

Regards,

Peter

No doubt NF will have a strong showing in PRS with the new F1s.

Who cares what other disciplines use, what F-Class uses means about as much to tactical/practical shooting as what hunters use means to an F-Class shooter. The only competition that matters is the one that simulates the use the rifle in question was designed for. Recommending a target scope for it is like recommending slick street tires to someone who just bought a Hummer H1.

OK, so what type of shooting will the OP be doing? Most people with rifles do not compete, but many go to the range and shoot at known distances so a NF NXS or Competition model would be tops.

Pretty ignorant statement, especially considering that we don't know what the intended use is. Yes, NF is good, but there are lots of great options available.

It's not a rifle that you just buy off the shelf, it's a custom rifle that you pay to have build to look like a specific issued rifle. Why get a clone of a military rifle and not get the scope that was issued with it? Seems kind of silly.

We still haven't heard what type of shooting the OP wishes to do, but would like to! Some M40 clone builders use Redfield 3-9's for closer-to-original Vietnam era model, but scopes have come a long way since M40 and M40A1s first appeared.

Best regards,

Peter
