Hi all,
I have just bought my self a 308 rem 700. I would really like to get in to shooting with my friends and there all doing targets in the 200 to 600yd rang.
I am very new at this and I'm not sure what to buy for a scope? I don't even know what the best power would be for me? The gun I just bought is not cheap buy any means and I love it..I don't want to cheap out on the scope but I thought I could start off by spending around $500. Please help a fellow shooter get his wings!!

Thank you!!

P.s

One of my friends said I need a scope that will go to a 30power in order to be consistent at 600yds is this true?

Well - You dont mention if you intend to use the rifle/scope for hunting... If this is the case, a utilitarian choice would be a 3-9 X 40, say a Bushnell 3200. As your just getting into target shooting, your consistency at 600 y will not be limited by the scope - you'll likely need to spend a lot of time practicing at 100-200 y.
The Bushnell 3200's come up on the exchange board regularly...

My suggestions are the Leupold VX2 6-18x40 or VX3 4.5-14x40 or 6.5-20x40 for target rifle. If you choose to use the rifle for hunting also....go with the VX2 6-18x40 with the LR duplex. The price for the Burris 4.5-14x42 is a good scope also with the ballistic plex.

A target/stationary varmint rifle could take a heavier scope, but you do not want to add too much glass to the top of a hunting rifle; you would be suprised how much of a difference 1/2 pound of gun will make at the end of the day.

I run a 6.5-20x50 VARX-II LR on my target\varmint rilfe, and a 4-12x40mm Bushnell Elite 3200 on my hunting rifle; the Leupold is almost twice the weight, but it is worth it.

There is the Bushnell Elite 3200 7-21x40 that falls in a good range, but the 7 power is a bit much for the low end of a hunting rifle IMHO. I do not know who has them, but a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40mm would probably be around that price range, and it would be a good compromise for hunting and target shooting.

Ahhh, that's BS - folks compete at 600+ yds with PEEP sights (palma). I'd go somewhere in the 3-9 or 3.5-10 range. The Leupold mark4 tactical scopes are cooool, but well over a grand. Best bang-for-buck is the Bushnell 3200 and 4200 series.

If you're planning duel purpose hunting/target I'd get myself a Leupold QR base along with two sets of QR rings (shop eBay, can be had relatively cheaply). Then buy an Elite 3200 3-9 or 2-7 (can be found on the board regularly for $200) and an Elite 4200 (or 4000) 6-24x40 (usually around $400.00 used). You can interchange the scopes as need be and you're set for both utilities.

What type of Remington did you get?
If it is a target one, VS, PSS... etc, then a good quality optics are a plus.
Zeiss, S&B, IOR....
If you're looking for the carry/hunting as well, then anything Conquest 3-9 or other good scope with 7x would do. Even a leupold.... if you really have to... :p

It is a VSF with the fallowing work done to it ==The action has been trued & squared, firing pin hole has been bushed, lugs have been lapped, the barrel has been set back and rechambered with a match 308 chamber, barrel has been recrowned, trigger changed to a Timney match trigger, barreled action has been skin bedded and properly free floated and entire rifle finished in Tan backed on finish,20 MOA picatinny scope base installed.

Thanks for all the help guy's!!

If you spent so much with the rifle, get yourself a decent scope.
It will outlast the rifle and you'll have it forever.
Schmidt&Bender, Swarovski, Hensholdt, Khales, Zeiss, IOR.
In that order.
4-12 or 6x24 with a large 50-56 bell seem to me like a good choice.

guys guys guys I think a proven scope for this gun is a leupold in straight six power it would adequately do the job excellent light gathering and will kill anything in its sights at 600 yards I do it with a 4x leopold lets hear some of your feed back thanxs and yet I also agree with the 3x9 or4to 12 too preferance is the key here go out and try them all and when you find what you like you will know GOOD LUCK PARDNER

Your friend doesn't know what he is talking about, unless you want to stick a spotting scope on your rifle.

+1 for agilent one. If your not gona buck up and dont wana spend the extra pocket change get that bushnell. Well worth the money, and I see loads of people use them out at our range on 700's. Come on you know you want a mark 4. Great for the money, but with that 20moa forward slope you can getaway with that bushnell. Does anyone have the come ups and down on that so he can make a decision if he can get back into say 100 yard?

I demand pics!

You forgot Nightforce :)

I'd suggest the Leupold VXII 4-12x40mm w/ LR duplex
