Im looking for a scope for my 257 wby and want more range/magnification than just 3x9x40.

Here are some options with pricing
Bushnell 6500 2.5x16x42 DOA 600 $650
Minox ZA 5 3-15x42mm - #4 - Rifle Scope 66024 $450.00
Leupold VX-II $429.36 4x 12 x 40 AO LR duplex
CONQUEST SERIES - MC $889 4x14x44/3.3x10x44 #20 Z plex Rapid Z 500,800,1000
REdfield 4 x12x40 Accu-Range $260.00

I would like to stay with a 40 mm because a 50 just seems to big and I would like to keep a wide enough field of view at the lower power that I can use it under regular conditions in Ontario
I like Zeiss but in the Conquest line they dont seem to have teh same range of magnification as some of the others do
I really dont want to have to spend $1000 on another scope
My concern with Bushnell is it seems their warranty doesnt seem to be as good but I have been told this scope is very bright

A buddy of mine has the Redfield-I looked through it and like it. It has a nice fine reticle and no-nonsense styling. You may find them cheaper at a site sponsor here on CGN.

As far as the rest, I have peered through various Leupold and Bushnell models. Another scope that you might look at is a Burris Fullfield II 4.5x14x42. It again has a nice fine reticle that is somewhere between target and hunting, with BDC mill-dots. It's also warrantied for life. If you elect to go this route, send me a PM and I'll tell you exactly what I like.

Zeiss and Redfield, would be my choices, the first for clarity and the second for the value... Cheers. JP.

When in to Rammakos in Sudbury - Amazing new store they have - but they need to do some Website work for online customers. Big enough for great selection but they still have a small feel - Yu get to deal with people who are not clerks just getting paid but people who know what they are talking about - anyways I checked out the Minox, Bushnell 6500, Leupold and Zeiss Conquest today. The Minox seemed very tight to adjust, Bushnell had a whack of features on their scope but it was a bit heavier, The conquest was lighter and much easier for adjustments. I suspect a decision would come down to Zeiss or Leupold. If Bushnell ever gets a better warranty I would be very tempted

Best to look thru each one. They are your eyes, not like your neighbors eyes.Your paying, you should want to see for yourself!

Good point - so I went and checked them out ... they all have good and bad points.... sigh
someone needs to start a "rent a scope" where you can rent for 30 days and then if you like it buy it with 50% of the rental price going towards the purchase cost - making it cheaper overall than having to resell it at a loss - but that might not be good news for CGN'er who are looking for a good deal :)

I have been anal when it comes to picking the best scope for my eyes.Try them in sunlight, clouds etc. There is a big diff between scopes, inside the store, and outside the store.I had thought the better the scope the higher the price tag.Not always ,spend as much time as it takes, for you to be certain, your getting the best scope, for your eyes.

You might also want to try out the Nikon Monarch.

It is what I am leaning towards for exactly the same spec/use you mention. They have a 3-12x42 and 4-16x42, side focus, among others, priced around $500. These scopes also have 4"eye relief and a lifetime warranty.
