I am mounting a 40mm objective scope on a Sako 85 Varmint,so I am looking for the best mounting system, and the proper ring height. What is your favorite scope mounting system for a Sako 85?What ring height are you using, and which scope?

Talleys

Talleys, Clay has them too!

I like them high, but I'm a big bastard ;)

I never could warm up to the idea of using bases on a rifle with integral bases already there. My personal favorites are Warne Premier Series - of course they were discontinued a few years back. Warne maximas are okay aswell, but they too have been discontinued but still available with a little looking. For current production get Sako ring mounts, not the Optilocks that used a seperate base and ring.

The Warnes I had were light but fit my scope like s**t. I have Leupolds now...great fit but heavy and hard on the eyes...

Optiloks are over priced , overly heavy , overly ugly rings....just my opinion...your mileage may vary...:)

get some Redfield bases that accept the familiar turn in style front ring and a windage adjustable rear....or get Leupold rings which don't use a separate base...afterall,..as doublegun pointed out,..the bases are essentially already there in the form of the tapered dovetail...or get the Talleys,...as pointed out by wookie in one of his never ending Sako #### photoshoots:D:cool:..keep them coming bud.....eventually guys will catch on as to how awesome the old L & A series Sakos really are..

At this point, those ringmounts look very good if Clay can get me a set,and he usually finds a source for all the guns and accessories that I need.

They are hard to find up here, hopfully he can start bringing them in. They are a lot nicer than the optilocks with the seperate base, and the insert eliminates the need for lapping.

I disagree with your comment. Warne are anything but light, but they fit like a glove and are great in my opinion - just hard to find.
Top rings are Premier Series (my favorite), bottom set are Maxima (yes the scope clears).

You'll need Medium rings, low will not work. Leupold rings are perfectly fine for me on varmint calibers. On my .270 I have a really nice set of Burris extension rings, these are rock solid.

I prefer the Sako Optilocks myself. I even have 2prs of the new Ringmount optilocks. One pr is mounted on my Sako m75 Greywolf 338-06AI and the other is waiting for a new project rifle in the future.

All my rings are low mount in both types of Optilocks with 40mm Leupold Vari-X III's to VX2 and VX3 scopes mounted. For me, medium is too high and the Extra lows I need to crane my neck...just not comfortable.

I could not agree more.

Optilock mounts are to high, even the extra low. You want a set that are very low then get the Control. They aren't that easy to install but from what I can remember you don’t like the design...

Weird, the Maxima's seemed alot lighter than my Leupolds. Then again I never weighed them both.

What do you mean they fit your scope like s**t?

They would barely clamp the scope and the dovetail tight enough to trust it. Also the rings were too tightly machined (inside diameter) to allow my scope to move freely inside them when loosened off (like when you're levelling your sights).

I hope that all makes sense...as for some reason im finding this hard to explain...must be all the meth..

The Sako base is tapered - if the rings arent grabbing the base tight enough, slide them forward. They were likely not too small, but rather the powder coating too think on the insides if you were having trouble with them. If you still have them and would like to dump them send me a PM. :)

Sold them a while ago :). Also I'm aware of sliding them forward to the wider tapered part of the dovetail, but it didn't help.

Maybe my Sako is "special" just like my mom says I am!!
