Just got #1 daughter her new model 70 Winchester LH, and now I am looking for a ggod scope for her. What I want, and what I can justify spending run a bit of a distance apart. What I want is a VX-II 3-9X40 Loopy. Cdn prices I have seen are $449.

Anybody here know of some place cheaper that is available? I found a place in the USA that sells them for $271 USD. Great price, but you need an export permit, and an import permit and it takes 30-60 days and yada yada yada! :(

Another question: Does a private individual in the USA need to go the route of the export/import permits as well?

Help me out here! :)

You will get your pants pulled down if you buy a leupold in Canada. Get her a Bushnell 3200 or a Burris, or Nikon.;) For some reason the price of Leupold goes all out of whack to what they are once they hit Canada.

Doesn't matter whether it is a business or private individuals, export permits are required for scopes.

Try Ebay or the 24hourcampfire.

I had RickBin all lined up to send me 2 scopes -- a 3-9X40 and a 2-7X33 in VX-II, but then the time element of the import/export permits came to play. The price he offered was $271.12 USD, and with the exchange rate like it is now, that's a good price. NOT willing to wait that long.

I guess I will buy Canadian, and take it on the chin, or the right rear pocket.

if you are not using it as a rifle scope say like a compact spoting scope would you have to get import permits like lable the box as VX2 or something and send it?

There are some companies that will send scopes/gun parts to Canada. Hawktech Arms being one of them. Most individual Americans don't know about the law, so eBay is an option.

We sell this scope at $449 with a duplex or wide duplex reticle. Try to keep in mind that the Canadian Distributor (Korth Agencies) has to apply for permits and broker all of these items across the border. There are numerous US distributors for Leupold and all they have to do is pick up the phone and the scopes arrive in a day or so and thus they will be less expensive at the wholesale level. Also the retail business is more competitive and there are literaly thousands of dealers selling Leupold products so they cut their margin as they can make it up in volume sales due to the much larger population base. The international shipments from start to finish take several months so to allow for the lag time Korth has to have numerous orders in place all the time. Having said this Korth keeps very large inventories in place (unlike some other distributors) and rarely are they out of stock and if they are it is either a production problem or a shipment is in transit. Also the international distributors have to fix the dollar exchange when they set their wholesale prices for the year and somtimes the dollar goes the other way and they eat the difference.

Sounds like a bunch of sleazy excuses to get more money out of us Canadians.
My business imports most of the products it sells from the USA and so we pay for freight on large items, pay a broker and retail them at prices competitive to the world market. It can be done and we do sell more of everything when I keep my pricing competitive to the world market. My company doesn't keep massive amounts of inventory and does order often to keep from getting caught by a changing dollar. We don't have to deal with firearm type paper but do have to deal with Transport Canada (aviation) paper. Aviation is probably the most highly regulated industry in the country.
I want to buy a new Leupold too and having to pay a $105 premium for shipping, brokerage and some paperwork is too much for me. Ebay and private sales remain good options for me.

Good Luck
John

If you're patient, you'll get a good deal on a 3x9 or 2x7 on the EE right here for lots less.

I bought all my scopes used and saved much! :)

Two thoughts...

A) For the work required to do all that legally $105 is cheap.

B) Private sales from the US require the same paperwork. You, and they MAY get away with it, but if you don't the consequences can be severe for both of you. Don't count on being able to enter the US again without a major hassle at the very least. Seems to me that the price of a passport is cheap insurance to know you can cross the border relatively easily.
