Best scope under $500?

I have a Leupold VX1 4-12x40 I'd sell. It's in excellent condition and includes Leupold thread on scope covers. Asking $400

Thanks again for all the input. Ordered a VX2 3-9x40 with the LR duplex. Very noticeable weight difference when compared to the vortex and many other scopes. All came down to it being the lightest and a noticeably greater eye relief and how quickly both her and I could have a focused image.

I would have recommended that you buy a used Leupold. Your buck bangs hard on the EE. Nothing wrong with a new scope, but you could have gotten a VX3 3.5-10x or 2.5-8x for that money.

So I bought my wife a Weatherby Vangaurd 7mm08 for her birthday, not time to top it off with a scope, have a set of talley 1" low mounts for it so will need to stick to 40mm maybe get away with 42mm. Was leaning towards a Vortex Viper 3-9x40, any other suggestions with reasons why would be greatly appreciated.

I put a Leupold VXII 3-9 on my Vanguard in the same mounts you mention. Perfect set-up overall.

Please refer to post #26 if you are wondering about the low Tallys on a Vanguard. I've used them on M700s with same scope no troubles.

stick the 50mm end on the rifle as it will be an excellent scope for dusky deer hunting

Redfield Revolution. So close to a VX2 you can't notice the difference except in your pocketbook.

I just put a sightron s11 on my new 300 and am quite happy with it. Happy with my leupolds also.

I am surprised that nobody mentioned a Leupold Ultralight VX2 3-9 x 33 for her rifle. Even has EFR, and mount it with Talley 1-piece mount. What's not to like? I have one on my Anschütz sporter, but it's also just fine on a centre-fire. I think I've read that it (and them Talleys) is popular on high-end lightweight "mountain rifles", right?
