Best semi-auto 22 for under $1000

GSG-15 and 16, Kel-Tec SU22E, Browning SA-22. All great options that are under $1000 and non-10/22 and Savage.
The CZ 512 would likely be the most accurate if you can find a tactical. I think they're disco'd though.

Ive had a few different ones including one with a carbon fibre barrel ( had problems with it so I returned it - I won't mention name of manufacturer) but then purchased a CZ 512 and I must say I am really impressed with the accuracy and how well it handles a wide range of ammunition without problems

Absolutely. And lots of them.

Okay, if you need lots of magazines then you probably want to stick with new production options. Not much choice then, really, if you don't want Ruger or Savage.

CZ512 for something traditional-ish. Or one of the black rifle lookalikes (Kriss, KelTec, Derya, GSG, etc.).

I should say, even though the Browning BuckMark rifle is out of production, there are plenty of those magazines around since they're the same as for the BuckMark handgun (which is still in production).

Maybe it's too 10/22, but you could add the Bergara BXR to your list of contenders for accurate semi auto's.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I do have a very old FN SA22. They’re hard to date but I’ve narrowed down the date of manufacture on this one to sometime between 1914-1918. They’re a fun little rifle to shoot, but not really practical for gopher control.

Funny you say that. My dad always had an ancient FN SA22 sitting by the back door for gophers. I believe more gophers survived than didn't. The rifle was sentimental: it had been his uncle's garden gun from sometime after he came to Canada following the First World War. Sometime after my dad died I discovered that my mum had given it away to a neighbour. I'm not really into auto-loaders, but think I might just pick one up! :)

So I picked up a Grey Birch LDR when I wanted a light, accurate 22- Carbon fiber wrapped barrel, minimalist aluminum chassis. They're based on the 10/22, but instead of the v-block (Which you could argue could contribute to the 10/22s being a little less accurate/repestable?) they use a barrel nut. Might be slightly over your budget, and obviously Grey Birch isn't selling them here anymore (They moved to the states), but you might be able to pick one up on the EE.

Mine was given to me by a happy customer as a tip! First and only tip I’ve ever gotten. I cleaned it up and gave it a complete refinish. It’s a fun toy but the tube magazine and bottom ejection makes it less than ideal for large scale gopher control.
