My friend would like to by a semi-auto. He currently uses a Remington 7600 pump in 270. He is leaning towards a Benelli, Winchester, or Browning. I'm not asking to hear about how all semi's are crap, I just want to know about quality and reliability of these rifles. The cal will be 7mag, 7wsm, 300mag or 300wsm.

Thanks.

Second hand info here, but a very good friend of mine hunts with a Benelli R1 in 300 Win Mag. Beautiful rifle with no faults to date (it's about 4 or 5 years old). He loves it, and I enjoy shooting it as well. ;)

I can't speak to the others.

Have used a BAR in 30 06 for more than 20 years. Accurate, low recoil and quick follow up shot if needed. There are several on the EE right now Search "BAR" to give you an idea.

I have no experience with the Benelli, although it appears to be a well thought out rifle. My concern is with composites and aluminum actions. The newer Browning is similar to this, utilizing a steel bolt within an aircraft grade aluminum receiver. Only time and use will tell.
The steel receiver BAR's are well made, although they also have their quirks. For the most part, keep them clean, change the inevitable timing latch and make sure the forend isn't binding and you'll have a good accurate rifle.

My understanding is that the Winchester is made by Benelli, is this true? Anfd what about the older Browning Belgium versus the new Bar.

Thanks again guys.

Browning BAR Shorttrac or Longtrac

Lightweight, accurate and reliable.

The steel reciever BAR's are great guns also, just quite abit heavier and if your friend is interested in a Short Mag they only hold 2 shells in the mag where the Short Trac holds 3 shells.

I have heard lots of great things about the Bennelli. I have never fired one but I don't care for the looks or feel.

The Winchester is not made by Bennelli. Winchester and Browning are owned by the same company and they take the same scope bases. The Winchester is a no frills Browning Longtrac and they don't have the same reputation for accuracy which makes me wonder if the barrels are not as good also.

Bought a used BAR 3006 in the mid 80's in 3006. Hunted with it ever since. Only problem was the "buffer" plate between operating rod block and receiver broke and had to be replaced. Like all auto's the action much be kept clean, if not it would sometimes fail to eject in very cold weather. For an auto loader I always thought it was amazing accurate shooting 1 1/2" groups of 3 at 100yds. Five quick rounds would open up to around 2" as things warmed up. Deer or moose will never notice the difference. Not that you would ever need 5 shots if the hunter does his part. A fine rifle.

Can you close the action quietly on any of these so every animal within 20 miles doesn't know your comming?

Yes. Can you close the door on your truck quietly? :)

It's called hand guide the action closed, besides which why would you have to as the safety on a Benelli is rock solid?

With my 300 win mag I used to put the safety on, load one in the chamber, push the action release lever, guide action closed with thumb, insert loaded mag with 2 rounds.

This can be done with one hand and very quietly.

I simply chamber a round and engage the safety before before heading into the bush...simple as that. It you control the bolt with your hand (as opposed to letting it slam closed) it's quiet enough.
