My Dad has the Wood R1 and it kicks about the same as my plastic one.
R1's are also fairly easy to clean. When the bolt is held open and you tip the gun barrel up/barrel down you should hear the piston move inside it. If it is hanging up and not making noise, it's time to clean it.
The longtracs are good too, and they are more accurate (same gun as the winchester SXR just different wood and no bolt release). I didn't like the floorplate system so I bought a few Winchester SXR magazines to use in it (fully detachable). Or you can just buy the detachable floor plate..
