Best set up for a mossberg 590 in 3 gun shooting?

Back to the 590...

If the matches you shoot at start with fully loaded magazines most of the time, then it would seem that a long mag extension would be of benefit. Personally, I don't like the look of the ultra-long extensions. If you need to poke your muzzle through the holes in a barrier, I would think they'd get in the way.

I also don't run chokes on my 590, and at our matches this hasn't been an issue - even with 7.5 shot. You can always run a couple of matches with a stock 590 to see how it works out and then customize. Although I do admit, "accessorizing" is half the fun of getting ready for a match (at least it is for me).

Either way you go, the 590 or 590A1 is a great choice. I love the location of the safety and not having to push the lifter out of the way when loading is a plus.

IMHO the 590 A1 while perhaps a nice "tactical" shotgun...........is really not the best for 3 Gun from my perspective. I ran one for a couple of years and still enjoy shooting it. However there are better pump guns you can get. My suggestion would be to opt for a Supernova. The sights on the 590 while great for slugs are actually slower for shooting steel and just terrible for the occiasional flying clay that pops up due to some devious MDs.
The problem is that from my experience you end up "aiming" their shots when in reality you just need to "point".

The safety on the 590 is also a tang type which is slower to manipulate than a cross bolt style (Nova , 870).
The loading port is more complex and does not lend itself to "mods" to improve the feeding for load 2 or Quad loading as much as the Nova does . The Nova Trigger guard actually blends nicely into a well dremeled loading port.
The lack of chokes is another HUGE draw back and one that I quicky rectified by having Tac ord thread the barrel for Remchokes. That added $90 to the price.

So if you have a 590 A1 already then great...........knock yourself out and use it and have fun. If you are looking to buy a shotgun to get started go Benelli.

How far out can you shoot with no chokes and still knock over steel?

If it's big heavy poppers, the answer is; Not very far.

And don't forget about the dreaded "Spinner" target. Pure hell with an open choke shotgun.

At one shot gun match I was told that I will be in open division because of ported barrel on my Mossberg 590 .. I guess that is only if it is IPSC shotgun match But after that I choose new partner "Benelli M2" & I love it . Shoot way better & faster then 590 & good for long range poppers too

A ported shotgun barrel will (almost) always put you into open division.

But most of the Mossberg 590 barrels are not ported.
