Yes making your own shot can be a huge saving, but I just can't be bothered to source the correct lead, then put up with the fumes, to make my own shot. And I have yet to see really high quality #9 shot from a do it yourself machine. Most do it yourself shot makers, are producing shot in the #7-1/2 range, the smaller sizes just don't come out as good as the commercial shot that I purchase.The only way it pays to load 12ga is if you make your own shot. If you have to buy shot, the only reason to load 12ga is if you just enjoy loading. You will save a little, even buying shot but as SJ said, the savings is minimal compared to the sub gauges.
