Best shot you ever made

years ago I blasted a magpie with dads old 22 cooey
The bird was way out in the pasture about 200 yards out
took the shot off the front porch using the railing as a rest, couldn't believe I got him!

I shot a bunch of menacing neighbourhood squirrels high in the tree canopy. One I shot right threw the branch he was hiding behind. Not bad for an 8 year old boy I'd say. And It was my first single shot 22 Remington with metal sights.

What is the best shot you ever made? (Its up to you to define "best.")

had a few in a lifetime 3 crows on the ground at 220 yds ...243 hb parker hale off fence post ,,,ready to shoot 1 when second crow started moving to line up with first //i waited and shot 2 with 1 shot...funny part when i got out there ,,the second crow was 15 feet behind the first ,,,clearly he got only a piece of jacket ..he flew 10 feet strait up then strait down ,,just didnt have the guts to fly off get my drift...just a great post,,,,my old friend always said......sometimes you just fluke em in

Shot a 3 legged Bull Elk from a fencepost rest about 4 years back. Only had cow tags, but sometimes the moral choice is different from the legal one ( I tagged it anyhow... that way the tag was used for only 1 animal ).
Lazered at 344 yds...Ross M10 with miltary peep sight.
174 grain Spitzer over 39.5 grains of 4895 IIRC.
Smellies ( Milsurp Guru on CGN) pet load
I'm proud of that shot, it's past my comfort zone...and my feel good, sporting zone as well.
Anyone who's ever come across Coyotes pulling down a deer will know why I took the shot...'Nightmare Fuel' right there.

Good on you Sir,
I'd have done the same,

i guess at the 100yard range. I had a big fly land on my target. thought i would try and get him. Sure enough, on the edge of the bullet hole, there was blood and sh_t around it.

I was maybe 12 and we were shooting frogs with a friends bb gun. I spotted one that was around 20 yards from us. Pointed it out but the other two guys couldn't see it so they passed me the gun. I took the shot and the frog leapt then hit the ground stone dead. Turns out the bb went clean through it, in one ear and out the other. Perfectly clean on both sides.

About ten years ago I was walking down a steep logging trail with another stander .We spotted a buck making a scrape at a y junction down hill. I was in the lead and told Tim to move over to the right and watch the other trail. as i walked toward the deer i loaded a round in the 375. The deer paid no mind .i was wearing those green nokian rubber boots that have little or no tread, took carefull aim and as i pulled the trigger,i slipped on wet mud and fell. the bullet went high over the bucks body, hit a heavy branch ahead of the buck which fell, blocking the path . the deer bolted and ran strait into the branch and tripped in it. the panicked buck was flopping all over there trying to get out of there, looked back at Tim the other stander who was shocked. the look on the deers face was sheer terror. i swear its eyes doubled in size . We walked back to the truck and saw the buck draging the branch stuck to its antlers. We coudnt stop laughing. At camp i got a piece of my shirt cut off with my name and date which was nailed near the rest of torn hunting shirts and joined the club. Thank god they dont keep a journal like some camps. The other best shot was from an older lady named fern who was a widow and tough as iron.there were older gents that always showed interest in her.We went out and set the line and fern was in the middle of two ornery gents that had said interest in her.A big buck flew through one end of the line , coming up almost on top of every one.it sounded like the fourth of july. The buck came strait at Fern and as it passed her she shot it. The buck hit the ground and was crawling trying to get away she did a coup de gras. We fliped over the buck and just looked at Fern. Fern shot off its genitles. We asked her where she aimed. She looked at the two older gents, picked up the genitals of the ground and said when a buck comes bearing down on her she know how to take care of itThe old guys just held there packages and never harresed Fern again.Honest truth. There was many shots at that deer and Fern took care of buisiness with one shot.

Half grown up slash....jumped a buck .......running straight away. A paced 275 when he hit a opening. Savage 110 in 7mag....160gr grand slam. Thought I missed. Dead deer, hit at the junction of skull and left horn, horn was 10 ft away. Total luck, but hey they dont die of fright. That must be ......longer than I want to admit....ago.

Got a yote last year at 507 yards using a modern sporter. Ranged the animal dialed the scope and it was lights out. Was only using shooting sticks as a support

Best shot for me here is SE Ontario where many of our ag fields are relatively small was on a coyote at a lasered (after the shot) 397 yards. All I could see was his head sticking out from behind a rock crib, he was anxious as the hounds were not too far behind him, I put the reticle a few inches over his head and let the 25-06 fly, the 75 Vmax took him right in the head and he dropped right there, I didn't see him drop though due to the recoil and thought I missed, then the dogs got there and they were pretty excited milling around and chewing on him a bit. Wish I still had that rifle!

Doing some predator control for my sheep when I spot a red fox. Knew it was a long ways but thought I will shoot at him to deter him from coming around. Turned the turret up to 800 on my Cooper Varmint Laminate in 6mm Rem. No wind to speak of. 69 gr Berger loaded in front of a max load of Superformance. Pulled the trigger and he fell over dead. Had to park the truck in two spots to laser it back to a combined total of 810yds.
Lots of gophers in the 300 yd range with the 204s. Most memorable one was when the farmer showed up with his grand son and their rim fire 22s and complained they could not get close enough to shoot any. Had to show them how it was done.

So, having read this thread, it appears to me that what some people think is their "best" shot is actually their "luckiest" shot. I have several memories of successful shots that, in hind sight, I really should never have taken, but they are not my best. I have made several that were carefully aimed, after a well planned effort to get into position as close as I dared, to a buck we watched bed down from a distance in early morning light. I think those are my best shots, but none of them involved any real difficulty in terms of making the shot itself.

two: a badger at about 4 feet with my dad's savage 64 in 22lr, it was in long grass and didn't see it till it was charging me

In my garage, shot a running mouse with a pellet pistol at about 25 feet

I noticed despite them being garbage and all, a surprising number of these shots were taken with Savages
