Best Shotgun for Deer - Canvassing the masses

Brockman

Try shimming the barrel to receiver area in your gun, it made a huge difference on my 870. Google "Soda can shim slug gun" for directions.

Also make sure you have a good cheek weld. My brother took a Styrofoam block and cut and rasped it down, then wrapped it with tape to secure it, it worked so well I did the same with my 870.

If you want to shoot 150+ yards accurately then there are only a few slug guns Ive seen that can do it.

Ithaca Deer slayer III shooting 2 3/4 Hornady SST
Remington 870 with 26" Hastings rifled barrel (Heavy barrel) shooting 2 3/4 Hornady SST

Both guns shoot 3" 3 shot groups at 150 yards. Thats 2.5" high at 50 yards and dead on at 150 yards.

My Mossberg 535 will shoot 3" groups at 70 yards but 10-20" groups at 150 yards no matter the shells. I put almost every brand threw it too.

I've seen a few 23" remington 870 barrels shoot well, But not 3" at 150 yards with all brands of sabots. Mostly 4"-4.5" groups

If I was to buy a new shotgun for deer, It would be the Ithaca Deer slayer or Savage 220 20guage rifled barrel. Too hard to find the good Hastings rifled barrels in Canada.
