With a top budget of $400 (I'd prefer to stay under $350) what would be the best new pump shotgun for the price. Or is there even a reliable semi-auto for that price?

Remington Express?

Mossberg? (i don't know which model is in that price range)

Stoeger?

Or _______________ (put your choice here)

I think your options for that price range are the Remington 870, Winchester 1300, Mossberg 500 and Stoeger P-350.

Best thing is to go to a shop and handle them all. See what feels right to you.

Id go with the rem 870 super mag or a stoger p-350. I own the rem 870 super mag and it's pretty heavy but never jams. The stogers a lot lighter + you get a camo finish and 5 chokes. Hard choice :D

I already have a 1957 2 3/4-inch plain barrel fixed (modified) choke 870.

It would be nice to have something with a rib, synth stock, three-inch capability and a tougher finish than plain bluing.

my votes for the 870 but as stated above, go to the store and handle each. they are all reliable tools, with many people who will back each brand as their fav shotgun.

mossberg 500 or 835 ultimag.mine have worked very well for me and being a lefty i like the tang safty. The 835 is also ported wich is nice when the geese are rolling in and your shooting 3 1/2 inch shells

Without a doubt the 870 is the best pump gun available on the market. The others aren't bad, but I prefer the 870 and think it's just that little bit extra.

If I got a new 870 though, is there a significant difference between the Express and Wingmaster?

I could afford an Express, I just have to decide if my 1957 model in 2 3/4-inch with a plain barrel and fixed choke is really inadequate or if I am just suffering from a case of Ineedanothergunitis.

In my opinion the Older wingmasters are better quality. I had an 870 Express. Got the job done but i never really liked the fit and i cosmeticly i hated it. But if your looking for a good beater with 870 guts, and don't care what it looks like, then go for it. It was extremley reliable.

I think you diagnosed your self right on the money. BUT there is nothing wrong with wanting another shotgun. Your old 870 is perfect. It has a mod choke so steel is OK. It does lack a 3" chamber but I have never found that to much of a disadvantage. (any smith can install a 3" ejector and ream the chamber to 3") Why not compliment your 870 with a small bore (16 or 20Ga) pump wingmaster. In fact the express line is availble in 12, 16, 20 and 28 ga. Actual wingmasters can be had in .410 also. I am a certified 870 armourer and I assure you that express models and wingmasters have LOTS of differences. The wingmasters are worth the extra bucks. Good luck in your quest.
