Hey Guys,

I want a little input on what we all consider being the best combo of SHTF Rimfire combo's. Doesn't have to be one rifle or one side arm. What would you guys want to have if you needed to survive.

My thoughts:

Basic 10/22 with 3 clips and a GSG 1911 with another 3. I also wouldn't mind a single shot gun for reliability. I think 1-2,000 rounds would be realistic for carrying in a bug out bag but any more takes to much room for other valuables.

What are your thoughts?

This is simple... the best SHTF gun is one you have ammo for. Without ammo, a gun is just a piece of useless metal.

I got tons of 9mm and .223 ammo, so those would be my goto SHTF stuff.

When #### hits the fan I’m just going to grab some cleaner and lots of rags and start cleaning. I don't get why everyone’s first reaction is to grab a gun and start shooting at the #### all over the place. That’s just going to splatter it more and also causes damage to the structure. Id rather not have to fix any drywall.

:p:p:p

OP, are we talking 22LR for getting supper, or self defence?

I'm not sure a 10/22 would suffice to take out human threats, zombies, or what have you. But it could certainly feed you.

I'll pass on rimfire guns and stick with my SKS :p

i dont understand the thinking "a 22 cant kill anything but small game" sure the 22 wont be able to hit some one in the gut and take him down in 1 shot... neither will your .357 magnum, simple fact of the matter is, if you dont hit the person or animal or zombie in the right spot it wont do #### all, and for zombies a 22lr would be the PERFECT weapon think about it, it will go through the skull then bounce around... you can carry thousands of rounds of ammo in a back pack, and the guns are light and easy to use... a .22 as a self defence, only requires better accuracy then say a sks, and id rather take a rifle when the shtf then a pistol, cause if they get close id rather use the butt end then nothing , but hey thats my thoughts

Remember to dab with the cloth rather than wipe and you will spread the stain less.
And then grab a 12 gauge with #4 buckshot

Why only one rifle? I get the 12 gauge pump, wife gets the SKS, and the boy gets the 10/22.

If I can only take one, I'd be pretty torn between 10/22 and the 12 gauge.

10/22 Pros:
1 - You can carry a metric ton of ammo.
2 - It can be fired accurately all day by a child
3 - volume of fire: 25 rds in the mag is worth more than 5 in the tube.
4 - relatively quiet with the right ammo
Cons:
1 - Not ideal for medium game and up
2 - Low stopping power (though stories on CGN relay the fact that a hip shot with a 22LR can still drop you instantly)

12 Gauge Pump pros:
1 - Proven reliability
2 - A 3" slug will stop just about anything
3 - ammo is abundant for 12 gauge, so a better chance of finding it along the way (same would apply to 22LR)
Cons:
1 - can't carry as much ammo
2 - loud. Very loud.

Well it deffinetly seems like there is a little education in the group and that is good to see. My thoughts are more on the food aspect and surviving then to be killing people all day long. For those who have been in combat situations you know that it is not always about the leathal hit but to hurt the enemy and deter them from your location. Yes a 12ga is on my list and in my safe but i am talking about bugging out from the city you live in. What if you had to walk 2-300km to a safe location out in the woods? Can you carry Ar's,12ga's, and enough ammo to serve you for years? Don't forget all your survival gear as well.

Based on historic fact the 22 settled most of north america. It may not be the most humain way of taking medium game but 25 rounds spread from the gut up to the eyes will certainly take anything after some time. To be realistic though the most common food items you will find in forests are small game and thats what the 22 does best.

Has anyone taken a small animal with a high powered Rifle? Last time i checked its hard to pan fry pink mist... lol

If there could only be one, a tough choice would be between a bolt-action .22 (of any type) and a hi-cap detachable-magazine semi-auto .22 ;) , so split the difference and get a tube-fed semi....:nest:....

Just kiddin'....:D

I do like the idea of a .22 handgun (semi-auto pistol or a revolver) as a convenient, light-recoiling, easily-fed thing to tuck-away in a (secondary ? ) holster, but most Canadians haven't had the extensive "American experience" of being able to haul around a "kit gun" handgun while moving around outdoors.....:(

On another note :yingyang: , people do feel the weight of firearms they have to lug around !

So if you're "bugging-in" :p , have all the firearms you want. If you have to move for any distance, choose a reliable, accurate and versatile .22 to take with.

Having back-packed around Costa Rica with my wife, I know it sucks having to hoof it with 50lbs of crap stuck to your back. Funny enough, though, the mountains and volcanoes were easier on my feet than a 4 hour forced shopping march in the city.

I need to invest in a sturdy backpack with much better weight distribution. Nothing worse than straps that bunch up. After a few hours it looks like a horse gave you a hickey on both shoulders.

Depends on the circumstances. If I'm bugging out in a vehicle then I'm brining the contents of my gun safe and all the ammo. If its on foot then there would be difficult decisions to be made. The fam can carry most among us but then how much ammo to bring vs food? Morethan I need and then cash it as it becomes too heavy? Most likely.

I'd want an accurized 10/22. .22LR to the head will stop any zombie out there...not to mention the ease of use and relative light weight of the ammunition, considering what you can carry with you.

I would want something with a bit more heft though, for the longer range or taking of game for sustenance, in which case I'd hope to have one of those new Savage 11 LWH in a common cartridge I could lift from any outfitter store I came across.

if I feel especially tough that day...mebe a 12ga shotgun as well. like mentioned previously, shotguns will or take pretty much everything. :D

I guess my thoughts got lost in communication. I am not nessessarily talking about only one gun. At the end of the day this is a realistic scenario and for most of us we have more than just one fire arm. If you could have as many firearms on your person as you want what would you want to bring?

The scenario that i keep running in my head is a solar flare that acts as a world wide emp and everything electronically controlled just got fried. So i am atleast thinking of what my family and i can take on our person on a 2-300km on foot trek.

The reason why the 22lr is on the top of my list is Cost of weapons/ammo, weight, reliabilty and ease of use. I believe that everyone in my group should have atleast one rifle and hand gun in a 22lr for both food and defense.

Someone mentioned that carrying 50lbs on a trip was hard enough on him as a stong indiviual who does that kind of thing all the time. at the weight of the firearms that you want and the nessities of what you need to live and then be realistic with yourself.

How about them apples?
