Best SKS rail?

You think you have it tough? I paid $99 for my SKS..........

Wow, I never quite imagined a guy could hang that much stuff off our rail system ..... showing off its full potential there.

I imagine all the extras add some weight, but since the rail keeps them close to your body rather than forward of the receiver, I suspect it will be easier to handle ... the rail itself is very light, about 120 grams, or 4oz for the metricly challenged.

I run bushnell trs25 red dot on my sks.

My requirement of sks optic mount is:
1. holds zero
2. remains field strippable (because I shoot corrosive)

First mount I used was a BC tactical scout mount. It replaces the rear sight with a rail. Cost about $75 shipped. Works great with trs25. Holes 0 very well. No problem with sight mounted forward. The gas tube lever will clear the optic if you play with the placement. It does scratches the rail and a bit of the red dot housing. Stripper clip remains usable, but the tip of the bullet has potential to scratch the rear glass of the trs25.

Disadvantage: You lose the rear sight. I do not trust cheap red dots. Also the mount is made of softer aluminum. When I transfer it from one sks to the other, I tried to force the steel roll pin, ended up damaging the mount. It did not hold 0 after that.

Big kudo to BC tactical support though, they sent me a set of new roll pin and screws for free (they even paid the shipping) in attempt to help fixing my problem.

Next mount I use is a choate side mount. Cost $60 for the mount and $80 at gunsmith (to drill and tap 4 holes). This is by far the most superior mount I've seen on SKS. Holds 0, can accept scope or red dot, iron sight still usable (can see through ubder the rail), field strippable (same procedure as without mount). I installed it on a sks using tapco mags, but I think stripper clip will clear the rail. You can always cut the rail shorter if you need to.

I've seen and considered the type of mount that hinges on the rear sight and dust cover latch pin (magWe### pattern). I consider them being inferior to drill and tap side mount, and more expensive.

I have almost tried them all and the Choate receiver mount is by far the best option I have used. As mentioned above it does it all, it is rock solid when mounted and allows for the use of stripper clips if placed correctly before drilling/tapping. The only downfall is that you will have to notch the stock a little bit for the mount to fit, which was no big deal to me.
