Best Slug in an 870 smoothbore?

The new Winchester power point slugs have been incredible for me. I can touch holes with them at 65 yards. They are supposed to be doing 1700fps, but I haven't chrony'd them yet. Very accurate.

lol. Canadian Tire... in Scarborough?! i'm still amazed they have paintball and airguns there.

i've NEVER been to a CDNtire that carried ammo.lol

huh?

oooooooooooook.

Hey, there are a couple Canadian Tire's up this way that still sell REAL GUNS!! and the selection of ammo, my god... amazing.

Had the Fabarm out and shot a whole bunch of slugs. My findings:

Brenneke Rotweil - best accuracy, ~ $4/slug, extremely heavy recoil

Challenger Magnum - 2nd best accuracy, ~ $1.80/slug, moderate recoil

Federal Truball HP - 3rd accurate, ~ $1.30/slug, little recoil

Federal Tactical Low Recoil - 4th accurate, ~ $1 ($0.80 bulk)/slug, no recoil

The Brenneke (depending on penetration, shock, and take down power) would work for hunting, definately not worth target shooting. The Challenger was only slightly less accurate, but far less recoil, and proven penetration power and fun on the range. The Truball is good all around, and oddly enough the Tactical is the least money with the least accuracy by far but can be shot all day long with no pain...

The surprise of the day was Royal Long Range buck shot (12 pellets - .32 size), that kept very tidy groupings (5 inch diameter pattern at 25 yards) out of a 14" barrel... all for $0.95/shell. Little recoil... great round.

I am sorry IchBinIenSniper, I take you to task on this statement, for the following reason;
Any game animal worth hunting, deserves at least minimally that the hunter prior to the day of the hunt, practice to the degree of competency required.

For instance prior to a wild boar hunt, I fired about 40-50 rounds of 12 gauge Brenneke Rotweill Classic slugs. To ensure I was well aware of the required hold-over at various distances.

Perhaps your meaning in your post was: target practice, for the sole sake of target practice only?

It goes without saying that whatever round you plan to take hunting, you better have target practiced and dialed it in, so that you know what to expect in the field.

However, if you like to "liesurely" blow a crate of rounds, unless, you are made of money, IMO I wouldn't use the Rotweil's (the Tactical may be the best deal). I doubt I would use them for hunting either, since I would rather not spent $200 to fire 50 rounds to practice, when I can spend $75 on a similarily accurate round for 50...

Also, the difference in accuracy for the top 3 were minimal... besides, I will be getting my red dot (still choosing) soon, and we'll see how that pans out over the blade front sight. And I'll make sure to document and photograph the target results, maybe even video the action:D ... I won't let bar-b-q divert my attention in the future.

Thanks for the clarification IchBinEinSniper, I fully understand now, what you are saying......

In regards to my choice, I feel I must tell you this. When I was accompanying a fellow hunter on a wild boar hunt, there were many many boar there. Ninety percent of which, could have easily fallen, to a foster, Super X Winchester, 2 3/4 inch slug.

However, there were a few really big boar, one of which weighed in, at an estimated weight, of 360 lbs.

As my partner only had a compound bow, and we chose to conduct a ground stalk, I personally felt more secure with the Brennekes, (because this is what I practiced with) and this was my decision.

Thanks for the reply, Cheers........;)

Don't get me wrong, the Brenneke's were excellent, but my ammo budget is a little "shot" with some of the other stuff going on. I haven't seen this stuff around much, and I had to pay $18.99 (+tax) per box of 5... is this an unrealistic price, or the going rate? Anyone know where there is a consistant supply with perhaps a better price by the crate? (in Ontario) I just know that there seemed to be only a slight trade off in accuracy but a large gain in price over the Challenger and the Federal TruBall. I found the Brenneke better recoil wise than the 3" magnums from Remington, and will not be buying the Winchester or Remington magnums etc...
