Hi: What are the best slug loads for bear? Where do you buy them in BC? I just tried some cheap winchester stuff yesterday and they seem too soft to me[don't penetrate in stumps very well]. I cast my own rifle and pistol bullets from wheel weights so could go that route if necessary. Thank's All

I'll second the Brenneke. Forget shooting into a dry media to determine terminal ballistics, you need to shoot into a water bearing medium to find out how the bullet, or in this slug will behave. Wet phone books, wet clay, drill mud, or a real bear are all better options. Foster style slugs, the ones with the round nose and skirted body penetrate poorly compared to the Brenneke or a heavy rifle bullet, but depending on the situation this can be an advantage if other people near by.

Slugs

Thank You for the replies. I did try those foster type and they are poor penetrators. I have heard good things about the Brennekes so i better get on line and find some as fishing season is here. Regards Dan

Maybe because there at least twenty years old I've found Winchester foster slugs to be accurate out of improved cyl. Ithaca 37 once the deer is down they've knocked the heads off grouse at 10 to 25 yds to make spagettie sauce. As for knock down on deer lung shots in one side out the other-- bleed out inside of 30 yds front quartering shot dislocated the shoulder tore up the lungs and ended up in the gut mass. Also used one on a hunt horse that had busted it's leg and would not let a vet near enough to put down, single foster both lungs and heart exited other side broke ribs both sides. Longest shot on a deer 65 yds. the closest 20 yds the horse 15 to 20 yds. Used within their limits they're lethal

are 3" magnum slugs enough to hunt deer or bear in BC? Or am i asking for trouble?

3" slugs are more than enough for deer and black bear. 2 3/4 have plenty of power. I use 3" when I'm in grizzly country and 2 3/4 in black bear. Albeit, I'm loading these for protection, not hunting.

Slugs

If you hit the kill zone with a 12 gauge slug (any 12 gauge slug) that game animal is toast.

Talking about a .50 to .72 caliber piece of lead weighing 300 - 750 grains travelling in the neighbourhood of 1100 - 2000 fps, doesn't really matter if its the soft leaded remington sledgehammer that mushrooms like a pancake or an advanced hard cast heat-treated dixie slug (sorry Garrett)

Actually i do have experience if it flattens like a pancake it is useless hence my question about better slugs. I have shot lots of bears with rifles but for protection i want to carry a 12ga and from the answers on here it will Brennekes
