Best "starter" black rifle for a newb.

For the OP I vote tacticool SKS and a crate of surplus ammo.

Buying a used pre built tacticool SKS is great as long as it means you dont have to pay for the accessories.

The idea of buying and building your own SKS is a costly and pointless venture when the best thing you can do is take the money you would use for a tacticool sks and put it towards a VZ58

sorry brahs but I am looking for a non-res. Should have posted that. Eventually when I become a member of a gun club and get around all that extra red tape I will buy a res gun as well.

Unfortunately "starter" rifles in the NR category are a lot more give than take in my experience. After trying and owning lots of the different NR variety, these would be my current top pics

Non-Res starter black rifle ...

Get an SKS, paint it back if you must. Or, if it's gotta be cool get a black Tapco stock.

Everyone should own at least one SKS anyway so might as well start there. Cheap to get you going, gets you out there and practicing. Move "up" when you can.

Fools!

tavor

thats it

thats all

I agree as well. The Tavor is a great compact gun with ammo almost anywhere. Just be aware of the gas issues (some people do not like the gas vent placement of the gun). I threw a muzzle brake on mine and the gas that was smacking me in the face was unbearable. That being said, the compact nature of the gun makes it a good truck gun, and I plan on using mine for primarily varmint hunting in SASK.

If the dollars scare you away, get a Norinco CQ rifle from Canada Ammo or Marstar. Cannot beat 450-600 dollars for an AR that goes bang almost every time.
