Best "starter" black rifle for a newb.

I started with a .22lr and it is tons of fun and cheap to shoot. You could kit out a 10/22 or look at the Ruger SR 22. Just a thought

I went with the 542 for my first and ammo cost is just too much for a plinking gun for me, plus parts availability may be in an issue in the future as they don't seem very popular and it seems that prices are dropping so retailers can unload them and be done with them. I'm currently trying to sell mine as well since buying an AR...

Since you want a NR gun I would look into the Keltec SU-16, it's a 223/5.56 that takes stanag mags so LAR-15 mags are a go. There's mostly the "predator" model available for about $1350 from most places that comes with a red dot optic, railed handguard and different sights than the regular model but I did see one in Wolverine Guns & Tackle in Red Deer that's the "f" model for under $1000; not sure if that one is NR though. The main downside I've seen with this one is the heat due to having a thin barrel profile.

Also you could wait and get the CZ 958 which will have a cheaper ammo supply and be NR but then that cheap surplus means lots of cleaning as well as 5 round mag capacity.

The JR carbine is a good suggestion but if you get the bug you will end up on the AR platform , I really like my non restricted CX4 but it was a useful tool on the farm .357 Sig , get a Cheap Norinco AR see how you like it and go from there .

Those CX4's are neat rifles, Ive tried a couple of them that friends have at the range and they are very nice handling and fun to shoot. They have never had any failures with them either.

Define your budget than get hte best of what you can ,

XCR-l does the job without any problem except for the 1-2 guys on this forum

While getting the job done with out a problem is huge, it should be of expected of this kind of money. When you get to this kind of money being spent you want quality that will last forever and features that make it exceptional while maintaining the reliability. The features and design should be inovative and inspiring. There should be at least one thing that it does very well that should make it stand out.

Unfortunately the XCR does nothing exceptional, the features and aftermarket are lack-luster, and has the occasional problem even running reliably.

There are other comparably priced choices that have unique, inovative, or more refined designs for the same or not much more value. The Tavor or ACR for example.

Half these guys will tell you to get a bolt action .22lr

I saw buy the first thing that tickles your fancy and never look back. My first gun was a Winchester model 1897 12 guage, 8 rounds of glorious rack firing!!! lol.

You said you love the SG 542? Save your pennies, I don't like the price, but I like the gun. If you want it, buy it. Better to buy a few expensive quality guns than a bunch of cheap guns your going to hate after 6 months. Been there done that.
