Well I am looking at getting a combo for my large game.

My friend shoots a 30-06 and so did my dad. I am thinking I will go that way aswell. Also thinking about a 7mm mag, but I just dont know.

I will be hunting:
75% Deer
10% Moose
5% Elk
5% Bear
5% Other  (Magpie go "poof")

This is a starter rifle, so I dont want to go too crazy. Under $750 for everything...

THE MODEL 200 IS THE STEVENS 200 FYI

I went with the last option cause that's exactly what I did, right down to the scope.

The 770 is definitely out, don't even consider it.

The Talley Leightweight ring/base combo works well with the Tikka, don't bother with the optilocks as you have really blown the budget at that point.

i was all for that option when i could pick one up last year for $640... now they are $870... i love the feel of it and want to buy it. but its a big jump from $600 to $1200 for a shootable rifle that in the end is going to do the same thing. i might have to see what i get back from income tax and go from there....

why is the 770 out?

I hear ya, I bought my Tikka a while ago for $700 taxes in IIRC.

The 770 is crap, just like the 710, no sling swivel, crap stock, heavy recoil, even in smaller calibers, it just isn't worth it, the savage FCX can be a great alternative though, if you really want remington, go with a 700, its a very decent gun with a huge aftermarket following.

I picked up a new Marlin XL7 in 30-06 for $424 tax in, and a new Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40 for $262.50 tx. in, grand total of $686.50. Best part is I never had to leave the house, got everything here on CGN :D:D Its a nice set up, shoots well, and for the money I think is hard to beat.

that has a floor/swing plate doesnt it? or is that just for some models? i really want something with a mag. just easier to deal with from the truck and the quad...

It has a blind mag. I guess they had to save money somewhere, but unless you are in and out of a car with your rifle, I see no problem with it, not for me anyways.

I personally do not like a removable mag, none of my rifle have one, this way, when I have my rifle, I know I have ALL of my rifle LOL

Hey Thundergrey,

75% deer says it all to me....

There isn't a better deer round than the 270Winchester....It is pretty easy on a new shooter (recoil wise) which is more important than anything else.
Trajectory and killing power wise you will never see the difference between a 270 and 7Mag. The 30-06 is a slightly better choice on moose, but the 270 makes it easier to place the bullets in the right spot....Put a quality bullet in the right spot and then break out the skinning knife!

The rifle is not terribly important (the Stevens is great)...Just do your homework. The scope is very important....Spend all you can here...Try for a used Leupold.

No, it might depend on the exact package. We've got some here with the accutrigger and blind mags whereas some have the 'clip' and no accutrigger.

Get a Stevens or Savage, and put any Leupold 3x9 on it or get a Bushnell model "3200" in 3x9. Get it in 30-06, 270, 308 and you will have a good set up for pretty much anything.

Don't get a savage package with the scope. Those Simmons scopes are junk. A junk scope is not reliable and can start shooting all over the place.

Don't get a Remington 770 or 710 they are the biggest joke out there. Don't get a Mossberg, they are not nearly as good as the Savage/Stevens.

From your options there I picked the stevens w/ the leupold. I have the Mossberg(walnut w/3200elite in 270win) and it's treated me great, but I think you'd be better off with a nicer scope on a cheaper gun than any of the crappy scopes/rings your gonna get with a combo. 3200 elite is a nice scope too....and brings the cost down from the leupold.

i thought about the 270, but ive heard they are very fast and they end up going through and not doing as much damage inside... not to say it doesnt work, just very fast... i donno... i like the idea of a smaller precision rifle, but when i see a moose or bear i dont want to feel under gunned. ill have to look into it... ive seen what a 30-06 does to a deer and it was a little much...

Put a good tough 180 gr in a 30/06 and it won't do a lot of damage. Speed(read that smaller)destroys meat not bigger calibres. I've shot a deer with my 416 rigby and we could 'eat right up to the bullet hole'.
