I'm new to the shooting community but I am looking for the best hand and long rim fire guns to get me on my way with not necessarily competition but just to have fun with target shooting

10/22, possibilities are endless for that one as far as a long gun goes.
I just added a VQ barrel to my VLEH and it's running like a damn sewing machine and at a decent pace I can hammer 25 rounds through a 1" hole lol.
For a hand gun stay Ruger and buy a MK III Target or other model, again like a sewing machine and very accurate.

If you're looking for something that will last buy a CZ or a higher end Savage Mk II. Both are stupid accurate and you won't have a need to upgrade unless you're looking to shoot competitions and even then you'd have to be pretty serious to upgrade. I have a Savage TR and can shoot well under 1" @100m with target loads.
For handguns I'd suggest the Ruger Mk II or MK III(current production). It will last till you're grandchildren are shooting and is essentially the gold standard to which all other 22lr auto pistols are compared. The Ruger 22/45 is the same action with a 1911 style plastic grip frame while the MK III has a more luger style grip with a steel frame so pick the one that feels better to you. Alternatively you can also check out Buckmark pistols.
Also when you do get a gun the thing with 22lr is to shoot every type of ammunition that you can until you find a type that you're gun likes. Shoot off a bench with a rest at targets and try to be as consistent in you're shooting as possible regardless of where the bullets hit(so you can get a grouping). You'll see quickly how some types don't shoot worth crap in you're gun while others shoot amazing. Wind will screw this up badly.

I agree Savage is a great start for the rifle. Please look up btvs on youtube. I have one and it's simply awesome!

I would say it depends on budget. Savage, CZ, Sako, Anschutz, Cooper in order of cost for Long guns. For handguns, my own preference is Beretta Neos, awesome accuracy and easiest takedown for cleaning. Having said that, Browning, Ruger and SW are excellent guns as well. For an rarer choice, and strictly for target style shoting, look at a Margolin.

I agree with the CZ and Savage rifles. For handguns, I suggest the Smith and Wesson 617 10-shot revolver.

Ruger SR22 tacticool or reg 10/22 the posibilities are endless and a ruger mark 3 target, 2 of the best firearms i have ever owned.

100% agree with this one my first rifle was a Remington 597 and despite some of the reviews it has been a workhorse rifle for me sometimes beating a Savage MK II in accuracy.
My 2nd one however was a CZ 455 Varmint w/Thumbhole stock even with some pretty subpar optics it still shoots amazingly at 50 yards. The bolt is smooth and the finishes are beautiful if you want a rifle that lasts since a 22 is likely what you will shoot the most the time I suggest CZ all the way.
