Best Starter Semi-Auto .22?

10/22...great reliable inexpensive gun! I can't say how many rounds I've put through mine and it has NEVER been stripped and cleaned!!!!
 
Ive had lots of semi 22's. Marlins, remingtons and rugers. I've never sold a 10/22 yet so they get my vote. If you like tinkering then its an obvious choice. True they aren't tack drivers out of the box but it doesn't take much to turn them into one.
 
I love the 10-22's. Yeah, they are not the best choice, but they are like LEGO that fire ammo. Really, if you want accurate, reliable and economic get an old bolt or lever rifle.
 
Bit the bullet and bought a Marlin 795 with some Xmass cash! Nice little gun, already stripped it, cleaned it and polished the sharp/rough edges in the bolt runnthrough space, the bolt itself and oiled it all up lightly. Scoped it with a 3X9X32 scope as well and boresighted it. Now to find a range!
 
I've talked to a few gunsmiths over the years and I have asked some of them if they have ever had a Ruger 10/22 in for repair. The answer has always been no. I can hit a grouse in the head at 25 yards with the open sights on mine so that's good enough for me.

The least $$ I've spent of a BNIB .22lr rifle was a Marlin 981T. I bought it for the 17rnd lr capacity. The micro-groove barrel is so accurate I've kept this rifle while other more expensive .22lr's have come and gone.
OP, if your 795 shoots like my 981T I think you'll be keeping yours for a while. Enjoy safely and post some pics!

I picked up a 795,its ok far as semi's go.I like my old mossberg 351 K better though,and I inherited a nylon 66 from an old rancher friend-it was his ''go to''gun.I use them for plinking and potting grouse
 
If you want it in a handgun, go for S&W M&P .22. I have it as a little brother to my M&P 9mm.

Saves on ammo costs, is a ton of fun to shoot and is in your budget...only comes with one mag though and they are bloody difficult to come by
 
You want a rock solid .22 semi-auto? Buy a Cooey or Savage Model 64B. I have had mine for 27 years and it just won't quit ! ! ! Very easy to strip down and clean, accurate, won't cost you more than $200.00 ( more $ for you to spend on ammo and optics! ! ! !) and while not the "coolest" gun out there, its a real hoot when your old gun out runs and out shoots your friend's hopped up Ruger. With American Eagle 38gr hollowpoints.

That's pretty much how I characterize the Ruger 10/22. My older Winchester Model 490 was/is more accurate IMHO. However when you are shooting gophers on the grassy prairies, you can run a factory Ruger a heck of a lot longer before it's starts to jam just from carbon from shooting generous amounts of ammo.
