I was using the usual Hoppes (#9 stuff?) that I have had for a coons age. Have some other stuff to try. Am heading to Edmonton at the end of the month and will be picking up some supplies if there are any to be had.

Do not use steel wool. Get those brass curlyQ scrubbing pads from the supermarket. Cut off a section large enough to give a tight fit in the bore when wrapped around an old worn sub-caliber bristle brush and brush back and forth 20-30 times. Extremely fast, effective, and cheap.
If the leading is stubborn and if, and only if, the barrel is stainless steel, mix vinegar and hydrogen peroxide 50/50 plug one end of the barrel and pour in and let sit for 10 min. Be careful not to spill this anywhere else on the gun. Flush and clean. REapply another 10 min if any lead still left. Again, extremely effective and cheap.

I used to use a Lewis tool but have since switched to wrapping a chunk of brass pot scrubber around a bore brush, it works great. You can obtain a perfect fit depending on how much you wrap. It is absolutely amazing for dealing with fouling in revolver cylinders when used with a cordless drill, I have also use this technique to remove heavy plastic fouling from shotgun bores (note use an empty shotgun hull with the primer hole drilled to fit your rod as a guide). Do not use the drill method in any rifled bores!!

how about BP penatrating oil?
i once cleaned a bore with hoppes until the patch came out clean. then, i used this BP stuff to run the bore again and the patch came out black! they advertise this stuff can reach microscopic level, where general solution can't go! they also say it's good on removing rust too! Yes, it helps, but not to the degree i expect it to be.
i got it from can tires...like $8/spray bottle.
