Best TactiCOOL .22 rifle ... non-restricted... stupid gun laws

I went a different route. I have always liked the look of the mp5 navy. I bought a home milling machine and drew up some plans. Here is my tacticool 10/22. It is heavy for a 22 but it feels like a real gun and not something made by matel.

I have know doubt that the other tac22's mentioned on this thread are far superior, that said I love my Mossberg. It likes cheap ammo, very few stoppages and can go toe to toe with my son's 10/22 for accuracy. Like others have said my only issue is the stupid magazine design, oh but I got over that real fast when I seen the price tag!

I really like the G36 look; not super fussy on the folding stock but it could certainly be worse. Looks really neat with the shorter barrel too.

I have a couple questions regarding it:

What kind of cost involved? What is involved in pinning the stock? To confirm, once pinned, it is non-restricted? Does it feel/handle reasonably close to a "real" black rifle (quotes because a .22LR is "real" enough to be respected and cause death/injury)? What kind of accuracy do you get?

I also like the SU-22 and have thought of getting one. Would it be possible to put one of the Magpul sliding stocks on it instead of that M4 style?

That Troy T22 stock is sure interesting, can it take the FDE accessories that the SR22 stock had? What's the difference between them? (I'm going to hit up google but I'm interested what you guys have to say as well). Would it fit a bull barrel? Would any of these?

Getting a tactical styled .22LR (for training, casual shooting, and general awesomeness) is one of the goals of my obtaining an RPAL in the first place, so this thread is very interesting to me.

Thanks for the help and to the OP for starting it.

The "G-36" Marauder kit on a 10/22 (at least with the stock length barrel) is non-restricted, even with the stock folded (no need to pin the stock).

As for how close it gets to the real thing? Well, I've handled both - the weight, balance, dimensions, etc. are all exactly the same as the real thing. The build quality of the result is, believe it or not, better than the real G-36. The real one can be a tiny bit loose feeling & a little rattly, whereas the Marauder (Nomad) is solid as a vault, with no looseness or rattles anywhere. Aside from a small difference in the appearance of the bolt, it is virtually impossible to tell the kit from the real thing. Of course, there is a vast difference in price, and you're actually allowed to own a Marauder...

Though I haven't tried it myself, I've read on other forums that some of the actual H&K furniture fits the kit - it's that faithful a reproduction.

To be honest, even after reading the great reviews on the Marauder kit, I was a little skeptical, but I really wanted a G-36 & couldn't have one. I specifically got it to replace my other "tactical" .22LR rifle, an AP-80, which was declared prohibited last year, seized, and destroyed, literally because it was too "scary-looking". In a fit of pique, and to assuage my desire to have a "tactical"-type non-restricted in my cabinet, I decided to get the Marauder kit for my old 10/22. In the end, even the great reviews didn't do it justice, and it puts a grin on my face every time I handle it or shoot it.

It's not as accurate as my bolt-action Savage, perhaps (although I've never bench-rested it to find out) but it's darned good. I put a RedDot on my Marauder, and my buddy & I have no problem consistently plinking golf balls at 50 yards with it. In my book for a tactical-style .22LR, that's as good as it gets. So far, in a brick or two of cheap, bulk ammo, I've yet to have a FTF, FTE etc. with it, using both the stock Marauder mags & a few old beater 25-rounders I had lying around.

Hope that helps....

Well that is certainly a high recommendation for the Nomad kit.

I would be possibly interested in the short barrel as well (perhaps on a second build) so I might end up having to pin the stock, just not sure what that entails. I have seen some online that have heavier barrels attached which also interests me (I've had experience on a friends bull barreled target 10/22 and like the heavier barrel). Also see other kinds of minor mods that can be done (looks like upgraded triggers, larger arm on the bolt, etc...) so that really appeals to me.

Thanks very much for the info!

That business with the AP-80 is horrible, just read up about it. So so wrong.

Does anyone know if the tubular fore-end (proper term? fore-grip? more a barrel shroud?) on the SR22 can be remove/replaced? I like the look of the platform shown earlier (post #3), except for that. Don't suppose someone knows what mods were put into that rifle? The troy stock has the better forward on it, but seems much more expensive as it doesn't include the action (at least where I'm looking).

That is really nice! Thanks for sharing!

Has anyone seen something like a G&P Style buttstock for a Nomad Kit?

Something like this (though obviously not an airsoft stock). I like the higher/adjustable comb and length of pull + could still pin the folding part so a short barrel would be legal.

Anyone seen anything like I was saying in Post # 130 ? Would that airsoft stock work on the Nomad kit? Something else like it? I imagine if it could be attached it would probably hold up, the recoil of .22 LR in a Nomad stock is probably minimal.

@ maclearen : I really like the SR22 shown earlier but I don't particularly like the transition from the square receiver to the circular fore-grip. It's kind of jarring visually, I know that seems silly to get hung up on, but if it could be removed I'd be pretty stoked. I realy don't mind the Troy stock either. I thought they were like $600 + but I saw them for mid-300's which is much more competitive.

I have a feeling that I'm going to end up with both styles of 10/22 before too long haha.

I have the Troy setup and my only gripe with it is you basically need to bed the receiver in the chassis. The contact points are limited to the take down screw and thats about it. You can rock the receiver up and down by pushing on the trigger group if you don't bed it down. Also the rear portion of the rail which attaches to the lower part of the chassis is somewhat loose when all put together. As you can imagine, that wont help accuracy if your optic can shift.

After bedding however, I am quite pleased with this setup. Have seen no POA/POI shifts so far in the hand full of times I've shot for accuracy. Very ergonomic feeling chassis IMO, and I think I'll be keeping it around for quite some time.

Thanks, it's funny how many won't admit to how much they'd spent on there .22. Atleast you have. I have bought two Mossberg T715 and sold them for excactly what I paid for them. I now have an SU-22 $500 + Bazooka Bros ar-15 adapter and AM-180 275 round drum mag $400. I also have a FAB bipod forgrip $150. Three 26 round mag $75
I however also have a savage btvs, $450, bipod $55, three 10 round mags $70, sightron 10-50x scope and burris ez rings $1000. So I admit I spent almost $1900 on my bolt action.
I do like being able to shoot gophers past 200yds with it!

I really appreciate everyone contributing; I admit I've been trying to keep this thread going. It's become quite a good repository for info NR Tactical .22's and that's a segment I am keenly interested in. I've been trying to ask intelligent questions but the info that's in here the better.

I am not super turned off by the price, especially for something that is going to last so long. I suppose if I had to drop the 2k right away I might choke; but I can start with a nice base and work my way into more parts and more mods over time. I would think that over a period of years the only thing that would really need to be done would be maybe replace the firing pin and or barrel, once the core parts were in place anyway. Has anyone had to replace the barrel or other parts in the 10/22 's ? What kind of service life did you see?

My initial hope had been to get a .22LR as a trainer for a full size platform, but it seems like most of those with realistic controls end up restricted. While there is a place for restricted arms in my collection, Res-Rifles are lower on the list.

I'm wanting to find a tactical 22 course. I'm sure there are tons of guys whoed sign up since it's cheap to shoot and you don't have to worry about a 5 round mag limit. Tons more shooting/practice.

Yeah, that would awesome; one of the reasons I was looking for a trainer with realistic controls was so that I could do some types of training while also building muscle memory for the system I was on. Even with 10/22's though, I'd be into something like that. If you hear of anything, let me know!
