Best thing to buy to store guns

If your storage area for your restricted is a "safe" then you can store unloaded, untrigger locked with ammunition in the safe as well. Eg. a loaded mag. No need for another storage box. Secondly, there is no provision to lock up ammunition in Canada.

hmm thats cool, I may just buy a pistol safe and a cheap $99 safe for long guns to solve my issues..

Can the ammo be in the safe? I have to kids, really wouldnt want a wood box full of bullets at their fingertips lol..

In Canada it is legal to use a pistol for lethal force if justified. The problem is our gun lock laws contradict this. Most people keep there guns in a safe in a room other then there bedroom. If something goes bump in the night, most will not have enough time to go to there safe unlock and grab a pistol. The other alternative is having your pistol in its original case locked and under your bed. Again the problem is time, If a knife or gun wielding maniac crashes your house most likely you will not have enough time to open the case, find the key and unlock and load your pistol. Unfortunatly while you're fumbling with the key, the intruder is breathing down your neck. aka you're f**ked!

The answer is, Buy a small pistol safe and put it right beside your bed. (I got one from costco for a couple hundred) Trust me this is your ultimate insurance policy. Store your loaded mags in a simple wooden box on top of the safe. Every night before you go to bed enter the code and leave the safe door ajar, and every morning lock the safe. Keep in mind, leaving the door open is not, legally correct. The key is make sure you buy an electronic combo safe, it's easy to justify to the courts that you were able to punch in the four digit code, rather then fumbling with a traditional combo lock. If there is a bump in the night you will be ready to protect yourself and your family, whats more, is this solution is perfectly legal, and worst case scenario easy to justify to the courts if need be...

Thats what I'm saying, buy a cabinet for your long guns and keep them locked up in another room, Put the pistol safe by your bed for "legal" home defense purposes.

I re-read the law it is legal to store a loaded mag in the safe along side you unlocked pistol. I keep my loaded mag right beside my pistol in the safe ready, I just said use a separate box to be "politically correct" because I thought they had to be stored seperate....

Anyhoo remember that your pistol safe cant be a cabinet it has to be a safe or vault, and don't cheap out, make sure u get a digital lock, those seconds could save your life...

good Luck

New gun owner here...wouldn't the 'spring' in the mag get deformed if its always stored loaded? I know, sounds stupid, but...

Oh ya I forgot, since were on the subject. Be sure that your loaded home defense pistol mag contains, Hollow points and not Full metal jackets. You may already know this, it's jus a friendly reminder...

no, what you're talking about is the springs taking a "set" - it's loading/unloading that wears a spring out- ie compression AND expansion-
and an awful lot of us use a deceased fridge /freezer for storage- just chage the door screws for pop rivets and put a lock on it if need be- mine came with

Hell, Yeah! I always wondered where people find those electrical cabinets for free... How'bout those grey Canada Post containers? They are bound to go out of service at some point.

Just a thought: the gun cases to the right are a giveaway, I'd hide them elsewhere.

Personally, I'd love to get the Costco safe, you simply cannot beat the price/performance of that one. The only thing that's stopping me is the weight: at about 150Kg that's too much for my broken back.

yea I put it on top of my night stand but the wife says it looks stupid lol so on the floor between the bed and the nightstand it goes.

Hahaha, thats the exact one I have. It works great and its a good size, fast electronic lock aswell. The only thing I still gotta do is bolt it down. But legally for home defense it gets the job done.

Yup, same here, our wives think alike... lol.... Now all ya gotta do is develop the habit of unlocking and leaving the door a jar every night before bed, and then in the morning closing and locking it. I got this habit down like clock work...

Good Luck,
