Best truck gun

Why not a Ruger 77/44? Great load selection and thump for the bigger critters, use a JHP on yotes, and shot loads for ditch chickens. It has a DM too, so your not stuck with a single shot when you get a chance for a double on a pair of coyotes.

Glad i could answer your question, now im off to the EE to find one.

With .22 LR and .357 magnum adaptors. Just lock the briefcase with its built in combination lock and you are compliant with the transport and storage regs.

Thats a cool idea, where do you get those adaptors and how is the accuracy with .22 and .357? Would be good to have if you need to finish a roadkill deer or something.

Another handy little gun is the kel-tec sub 2000 carbine in 9mm or .40

surprised no one has mentioned norinco m305 shorty, about the size of an sks with power to knock down a bear and shoot into space, reliable and ammo is common, semi auto for maximum firepower

excellent reliability

plethora of aftermarket part

detachable magazine

has shoulder thing that goes up

Based on the chambering selection, that thing would be next to useless for any type of hunting, truck gun or otherwise.

Yes, the sub-2000 is useless for big game, but would work for coyote or smaller out to fairly decent range. Don't forget velocity will be higher with longer than pistol barrel. Or would be good for finishing off crippled animals hit by cars. I came across a suffering deer one time and sure wished I had a gun. (Or even a good heavy hammer)

For big game I'd probably go with the .303 enfield idea, perhaps shortened to a nice handy length.

I like a sporterized Enfield for shooting trucks, myself.

In all seriousness though, it's tough to beat the convenience of the detachable mags provided the sights are decent and it likes Federal blue box.

I have one in a cheap plastic stock but it's missing part of its rear sight so I can't adjust it. Can't bring myself to get rid of it though, still scour gun shows hoping to find the missing link. I'd love to take it down to 18.5 and put new sights on it but that would be more than the gun is worth.

Just thought of another good one, a M96 swedish mauser 6.5x55 with the barrel shortened and a long eye relief scout scope mounted on one of those mounts that goes where the original rear sight was. There is one on the EE right now.

That would be an awesome choice, keep a couple stripper clips of 6.5x55 on you and super convenient to load and use. Maybee some reduced cast loads for small game too.

If you drive a King Ranch Ford or a Dodge Long Horn I think an all original Pre-64 Winchester Super Grade in .375 H&H is a reasonable choice.

The good old 870...I am never in one of my vehicles without one. The variety of loads with a 12 gauge is very useful. Very rugged design too if you are out on some 4x4 trails. But the best feature of a shotgun is the sound of the slide being racked

Flat is where it's it.
Lever action carbine, slides in and out of the old school seat cover envelope like silk.
SKS's are blocky and heavy. Cheap ammo sure, but a tad unweildy IMO. Lots of protruding stuff to hook and damage truck interior.
Shotguns are pretty much useless for me, but I'm a prairie boy that ought to be mentioned too.
Lee Enfields are a little blocky but the sporters are a dime a dozen so that's a point in their favor. A they can reach out and take care of business too.
I've a LE bbl'd Martini that is ideal as a truck gun. 303 br, flat and short. But a tad expensive for a truck gun

Not gonna keep the gun in a case? I keep my COMBO trigger locked, it is oil up and put in a gun sock to prevent rust and is in a cheap soft case with a box of ammo in the case. I do not road hunt so I do not need to pull it out in .2 seconds...besides I can get it out and loaded in under 30seconds which is still fast enough for any use.

Just bought a pick-up for beating around the back country. Now I need a gun to go with it. Was thinking of getting another Marlin 1895 because its so damn fun to shoot plus its the perfect size for quick in and out situations! But want some other opinions. So, what is or would be your truck gun?

before I opened the thread i was about to suggest a lever marlin in 45-70, but it looks like you already covered that :)

"best" depends on where you live and what you use it for, i have a few truck guns, my sks, a single shot 12ga trimmed to a 18" barrel and my 8.5 grizly are what usually ride with me, i like the shot guns for the multi uses, (7.5 shot, 00 buck, 1 1/8 ounce slugs, and flares are in my door pocket) and i like the sks for anything with range and it was my first gun :), i pretty much always have a gun in my truck (meeting all regs) and i kinda like the 8.5 inch grizz to prove a point, i went home to kelowna for x-mas and fully enjoyed showing anti's i am not only comfortable with firearms but more comfortable with a firearm.
