Many folks believe the 155 gr Palma bullet is the answer to long range shooting with the .308 Winchester. If you intend to shoot in a sanctioned Palma competition the 155 gr bullet or lighter is mandated. The 155 shoots well in 1:12 rifling, and the slow twist means that the bullet can get higher velocity with less gyroscopic induced drift down range then would be the case with the same bullet in a barrel with a faster twist. The 155 stays supersonic to 1140 yards with a MV of 2900 fps.

I prefer heavy for caliber bullets, and my target rifle has a 1:8 twist. I am getting 2500 fps with 200 gr bullets, and I am anxious to experiment with 220 and 240 gr bullets as well. My logic is that a heavy bullet is less susceptible to wind, and although the MV is lower, the heavier bullet gives up velocity at a lower rate. A 155 gr bullet goes subsonic at 1140 yards while the 200 gr bullets remains supersonic to 1165. Big deal you say - well at 1000 yards the 155 drops 335" while the 200 gr drops 278", a difference of 57" or nearly 6 minutes of elevation. This does not make the 200 gr bullet more accurate, just easier to shoot accurately.

:D No, you're all wrong, the super secret, secret squirrel twist for 308 bullets is 9.3785. Any variation from this means your gun is a slug, and will never shoot as well as the guns owned by those "in the know". Actually, I do believe we have entered "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" territory. Except for extreme bullet weights at either end of the scale, 1-9, 1-10, 1-11, 1-12, 1-13 makes very little difference. I've seen examples of all of these shoot well (and poorly) with bullets that they were deemed "ideal for". - dan

Most commercial barrels are in the neighbourhood of 1-12", and as noted, seem to be pretty tolerant of the 155 - 165 - 168 varieties.
If you're looking at heavier bullets, THEN I think you'll be wanting a custom
job in the 1-8 or 9" 'neck of the woods'.
I think 155Palma's in a 1-12" twist is probably the best 'long range compromise' in 308Win..(there are lots of better 1000 yard choices out there.)

My Stainless McPhee 26.5" barrel has a 1 in 11.3" twist. This is supposed to be the optimum twist for 168,175, & 178gr match bullets..............and it shoots them ALL VERY well!!!!!:D :dancingbanana:
