I hope this isn't too much of an oxymoron, but I am wondering what the best value rifle in .17HMR is? I would like a Savage because I've heard nothing but good about them, they are roughly $400 at LeBaron. Is this the entry level price in this calibre? Is there anything comparable in the general price range (ie less than $450)? I know there are lots of .22LR's for less, but cannot seem to find much chambered in .17HMR that isn't over $500.

H&R Sporter .17HMR

Priced around $250.

Heavy barrel, break action single shot.

A surprisingly nice & accurate rifle.

Lebarons carries a blued synthetic version. The marlin 917V and savages are good for the price aswell. I was looking at the marlins/savages and ended up going with a CZ. I love it, just screams quality over the others. Kinda scared of scrathing it while hunting though. They all have a reputation for good accuracy.

I have the Savage 93R17GLV, and yes, probably the best value on the market. I have a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40SF on top of it, and off the bench with very little wind, I can easily pick off shotgun hulls at 200 yards...and I don't even shoot that much these days.

The H&R looks the same as the NEF .17hmr that they have online at Cabela's. It looks like the best priced rifle so far. Any disadvantages or issues with it being a break barrel?

H&R (Harrington & Richardson) and NEF (New England Firearms) are owned by the same company (Marlin)

I've never had an issue with the break barrel, in fact I find it refreshingly different from a bolt or semi-auto. :D

I think the Savage 93RFV is probably the best bang for your buck...... But I am a little biased, I own one and I love it!!

I put a 6-24 Ncstar scope on it, It's ok, but I was trying out a scope a buddy starting up a business was selling..... I shoulda just stayed with a Bushnell....... But for $120 it is pretty good.

Here is some "eye candy"

Cheers!

Try Russell Sporting goods. That's where I bought my Savage. It's a totally online store. they seem to have better prices than others, even when shipping is considered.

I've been looking around too and found one at Cabelas that looks interesting. The Mossberg Model 817 Plinkster .17 HMR Bolt Action Rifle. It's not actually listed on line under 17 HMR but if you click on rimfires, it comes up. Looks SWEET:D Thumbhole stock. Tip down forend for support I guess. What does anyone else think of this setup??? No idea how it shoots??? Anyone know or have experience with this rifle?? Comes with blued or chrome barrel.
The description is
"New from Mossberg, the Model 817 features a rugged, all-weather synthetic ambidextrous thumbhole stock matched to a free floating 21” blued barrel for .17 HMR long range accuracy and precision in changing weather conditions. Each rifle is equipped with factory mounted Weaver style scope bases for quick ring and riflescope attachment. Includes 5 shot detachable magazine. Overall Length: 40”. Weight: 4.5 lb."
Priced at a very attractive $250 - $270 range !!!
I'd love to hear any feedback on these!
