Ok i'm just looking for tips and tricks to clean it up when i get mine in. i seen on yt brake cleaner, and oven cleaner of some sort for the wood, i was told scalding hot water and just wipe down. if heat works by chance would using a hair dryer work at melting the crap? any help would be nice

Boiling works but I find it still leaves residue behind. I normally use brake cleaner or varsol, I've also used wd40 to melt the Cosmo away too.

I soaked everything but the stock in hot soapy water for about an hour, then scrubbed with a toothbrush. It's tedious work but I got most of it off. Then I tested each part with q-tips and still found traces on pretty much every part so I hit it with break cleaner and let it soak for 5 minutes, then I had a clean gun. Just make sure you have a good window of time to work it took me about 5 hours total. Theres a really good sticky about cleaning and taking down an SKS I highly recommend it.

Just did my new SKS. I took it down completely and then used paint thinner on all the metal parts. I dismantled the bolt soaked the bolt & pin as well as the trigger group in a container of paint thinner and I used a toothbrush on the rest. Pipe cleaners and patches in the gas tube and barrel...the thinner dissolves the stuff quickly and then you just wipe with rags and finally wipe down everything with gun oil...except the firing pin. The wood was not bad so I just wiped it down with rags, laid it in the heat at a sunny window and kept wiping it down. Ready to shoot now.
It's an interesting exercise providing a great opportunity to get familiar with your rifle.

Hot water and soap for the steel. Blow dryer for the firing pin( use pliers Softly hold on to it) and hair dryer on stock.

Industrial Ultrasonic machine....we did this a couple years ago in my shop...cosmoline removal in under 2 mins:p

May cause reliability issues in cold weather, gas system can get very dirty with a mix of cosmo and powder residues, also leaving the firing pin gummed up can create a slam fire and last, cosmo attract dirt.

Thanks dude. You have to be the most helpful of all the members on here. You seem to take a genuine interest in helping other members. You should be CGN of the month.

Simple Green is a non-toxic solvent, you can get it at CTire. I used it to clean mine and it worked great. I got the purple stuff. I also use it to clean my kitchen.

I used brake clean for a good part and put it in the over 5min at a time, you could watch the cosmo drip out of every crack and boil out of the wood. Just when you do it, do it in the morning then leave for the day with the windows open lol

Good old gasoline works well also. It and paint thinner both burn about the same so ones as bad as the other and you should not do it in the house. For the stocks Easy Off oven cleaner removes the oil from the wood especially around the action where it was oiled during use in it's old life unless it has a new stock for some reason.
