Best way to cut down a barrel on a shotgun?

Hacksaw. The pipe cutter will crush the metal in a little ring around the end that you'll have to work at to file past it.

Hacksaw and then file to square and clean up the end. If you can find a way to make up a nice definite right angle T shape where the leg fits down in the bore so you can hold it against the bore and sight for square that would be great. File until it's as square as you can make it. Remember that a lot of barrels are tapered so you can't trust the outer surface to be parallel to the bore walls. That's why I'm suggesting a little metal T square that fits INSIDE the bore to check it.

Once filed nicely square break the endges on the outer rim and just lightly polish the bore rim to remove any wire edge and so you can't actually shave with it. Don't get too aggresive with the edge removal on the bore side. Just enough that you can't cut your skin with it when you rub it.

The SxS I shortened for cowboy action worked out well. The barrels still shoot decently to POA given they are now cylinder bore.

Bad idea. See the cfc for details.

Ya no need to contact CFC, as long as you measure twice and cut once.
Keep it legal and all is well. Definately use the hack saw, then file to square the edges, also as said make sure you SLIGHTLY taper the barrel at the end.

As far as doing this with a SXS I have heard to many stories about guys ruining the POA/POI because the way a the two barrels are spaced at the end to regulate POI is not the same as in the middle. Some guys have luck with it, others find themselves with a useless gun after. Single barrel = pull the trigger on the shortening idea, double i would personally take to a gun smith IMHO.

I was under the impression that any barrel cutting or shortening is prohibited. Using a "new" barrel manufactured shorter or having one custom made is the only way around this.

Well it is if you're going shorter than 18.5" or 18" depending on the action. If you're lopping off a couple inches to make it handier, or cutting it down to 19" (provided the overall length is still legal), it's perfectly fine.

if you got a 30 inch and want a 20 inch np its legal (i would get a good gunsmith to do it or at least a machine shop)

if your going too short its a prohib

It's a scatter gun--not exactly long range precision, especially with a short barrel.

If youre broke use a hack saw and file it down.

If you have $ to spare, bring it to a machine shop and have them do it.
