Word of mouth.
Luck.
Antiques sometimes just come out of the closet, but that happens less and less all the time.
Sometimes a person is just in the right place at the right time.
 
Find a collector in the field that you are interested in. They usually know where the stuff is and can help. Most seasoned collectors know where entry level items are and will usually share with a new collector as they don't need these items themselves.
