welfare should be done away with immediately, I fully understand that there are people who truly need a bit of help due to death, sickness etc but as for the rest of the lazy slobs I say if they want government funded food, clothing and shelter they should have to take their lazy asses to a Canadian forces recruitment centre to get it.

A sturdy single shot 12 gauge. Depending on what you throw down the pipe, you can harvest pretty much any game in North America with it.

Yes, there are people who abuse the system. but there are also good people who fall on hard times, and there are parts of this country where there is simply no work to be had, even the much bandied about "shaking fries at McDonalds" jobs. If someone is fighting to keep their head above water and their family fed, let them take and cash their welfare cheque. It comes out of my taxes too, and I'm Ok with that.
And if wandering through the bush with a 12 gauge, shooting for the pot, helps... So be it. If they're willing to hunt for their food, they're no welfare bum, as far as I'm concerned. They're someone willing to put in the effort to feed their family. And a rabbit in the stew pot is a meal they didn't have to hand over cash for, so maybe they can use that cash to put gas in the car and go look for work, or buy a ream of paper to print off some resumes.
The world is not black and white. Get over yourselves you heartless prags - attitudes like those on display here are why the right takes so much scorn.

Sorry, but the last thing the CF needs is a bunch of lazy, slobbish recruits. Unless it involves a penal battalion.
I have no issue helping out people who have fallen on hard times....... But, from my experience, that is about 1 in every 20 welfare recipients.... My town is rife with single mothers with 3-4 kids from 3-4 fathers collecting welfare, baby bonus etc...... And to make matters worse it seems like welfare breeds welfare as this goes on for generations........
If it weren't for the system leeches, think how much money we would have to invest in Canadian industry and actually help out those in need by supplying good, sustainable jobs all while growing the economy.....

But in regards to the original question; I believe that an SKS is pretty much the perfect "low cost" rifle.
Cheap surplus for practice and plinking.
Decent quality low cost hunting ammo
$300 and you have everything to protect yourself and your family from critters (both 2 and 4 legged). Teach basic firearm safety to your children. Harvest meat for the table; and hone your shooting skills.
As for the OT discussion about the "necessity" for a welfare system and how it is currently run in the country.... I believe it needs a drastic overhaul. I also believe it is a necessary "evil" in our society. But it should have conditions attached. Strings as it were!

Never been on Welfare but about half of the ideas being tossed around were "all I could afford" when I was younger and raising a family. Tough to justify a decent rifle when the kids need clothes, food, snow suites etc.

Government shouldn't take the place of charities. If people need help, there are lots of people and organizations that have big hearts. Seizing money to dispense isn't charity, it's theft. Charity by definition requires the act of volition. It would also make the question of what firearm someone on a welfare like charity would need - whatever the person giving it to him or her chooses. Hence the expression beggars can't be choosers.
Exactly..... The numbers don't lie..... Cheap rifle, $200...... Box of bullets, $30...... Deer tag, $40...... Gas for hunting season, $50 at least....... That's $320...... $320 buys an awful lot of beans and wieners.....
Can you get a good slug for $1.50? The last time I looked at slugs I saw that Federal 12 Ga 2 3/4 in 10 oz slugs were going for $9.00 a box of five, before tax..and the 3" stuff cost more.
The SKS may not be a bad idea. Hadn't thought of that.
By the way, the politics of welfare don't interest me at all, just the concept of the "welfare gun" and mostly as humor. It Sunday, too hot for a motorcycle ride (that means its real hot)...hiding in the basement...may hit the reloading bench.

If you're sucking the govt tit, funding a HOBBY should be the least of your concerns. This sport ain't cheap.
I'd shovel $hit before welfare was an option, any guns I had would be sold to fund my cost to live before another single round went down range.
Some of the "young guys" at work talk about EI as a fall back plan when things get slow "cause they've paid into it" like its an untapped savings account.
However........If I was living off the land, and needed a rifle to hunt plink and feed the family it'd likely be a Norinco Bolt rifle in 223 or 7.62x39 or an old 12g pump.
I personally know one fellow here that because of the recent changes to the child benefit payment coupled with the fact that he has 5 children will be getting $2000 per month from the gov't. He can and will be living off that amount and will not be working in the future.
He has a good trade and could easy be working locally grossing +/- $100K per annum.

Single shot shotgun for $150... with bird buck and slugs you can hunt anything.
Toss in a $150 single for shot .22 and you can even plink with dirt cheap ammo. Someone on welfare is in the game with $300 for two rifles and $100 worth of ammo. $400 total... how much is a welfare cheque?

I have no issue with a guy like you skneub...... EI is there for guys like you, it's a system you paid in to and I know first hand that you are looking for a job and are willing to take lesser work if you have to...... Welfare is a govornment handout and should be meant only for those with no alternative...... Not for those that select it as a lifestyle......
Even a shotgun needs fed...... And costs money..... So do tags, gas etc......
