Best Youth rimfire

I took my 7 yo son to the range for the first time and lethim shoot on the rimfire night...he loved it! And he shot about a 2.5inch 10shot group at 25 yards! I was impressed!

Now I have started searching for a youth rimfire, one that will fit him.
What do you all think is the best youth rimfire?
I think I would like a bolt, and something with open sights that could eventually mount a scope.
I have considered the marlin and henry mini bolts but I seam to favour the savage cub with the acutrigger.

Any comments? pro-cons to any of these or other models?

My 10/22 just seems a little too long lop for him and I dont know if I like the idea of a semi versus loading one at a time with a bolt as a newbie! Plus I think he would love his own rifle!

My 10 yr. old daughter has the Henry Mini bolt. The reason I chose that one is because she is very petite, and Henry made the smallest .22 that I know of. Its a nice little rifle, but the trigger is very rough.

Go for a cooey, lots of them around at shops, easy to customize and most have cuts in the receiver for a scope.

The best rifle for a youth is one that fits properly. Doesn't matter the make or model, the most important thing is the fit.

Once that's done, I like to suggest bolt actions and most of the time single shots. The cricket comes to mind and so does the Savage Cub.

I like the CZ 452 Scout. Well built and very accurate.

My son started shooting at ~6 with a "chipmunk". Really well finished little single shot. Can't imagine anything much smaller than that. He totally loved it and actually shot a few nuisance squirrels with it. Not cheap tho if i recall. He would never let me sell it tho. Google it

The Chipmunk, Cricket, Mark II Youth and Cub are all child sized rimfires that would do him well.

The Stevens Favorite is/was also available in 'youth' size

The cheapest option would be a cut down Cooey.

I really like the Savage Cub.
Got one for the wife ( she's 1/4" short of a full five feet ) and we've found it extremely accurate and easy to handle.
I agree with the idea of a single shot - less potential for problems and a real good base to start from.

Or if you want something a little different (for not much $) Tradeex as quite a few Husqvarna 22 Cal. Single Shot Youth Rifle. Some with round or octogonal barrel.

I second the tradex idea. I have a similar looking old .22LR FN single shot that weighs about 3 lbs. I have used it with a number of new shooters, young and old, and they all loved it. For $80-120, there is no better deal.

a first gun is probably a lifelong keeper, i'd go with the stevens. young lads grow quick
after that probably ruger 77/22 stainless paddle stock
