Betrayed by my hunting partner

I would dump the guy and never darken his doorstep again. Real hunters don't poach another guys deer like that. better to hunt by yourself then to get stabbed in the back like that. he would have been carrying the deer out himself also.

Wow what a bunch of bellyachers..Any wonder the bunch of you don't all hunt alone...Just remember when you get older hunting alone becomes alot less fun, and nobody hunts with a grumpy old tightarse...

The deer was NOBODY'S until it was shot by this hunter...Good on him...I would shake the guys hand in congradulation..
This guy got very lucky on two accounts...He got a nice deer, and doesn't have to hunt with the grinch anymore....Remember that when he is at his uncles cabin in Sask next Oct without you...There can be a happy medium if one of you just grow up..

Not sure how long many of you been hunting, but I have a hard time with this ''my deer'',or ''my area'' BS....How big is this buffer zone that you call your area anyway?
I know out of experience that the more people moving around the woods in deer season the far better chance you have of seeing greater numbers of deer, besause they are being lifted from thier beds, where the would likely stay all day....90+% of the trampers have no idea what they are doing, other than walking and for the most part don't hurt the deer population any(this goy got very lucky)...What they do is push deer to those in stands and blinds...Your stand, or blind isn't going to the deer! The more hunters the merrier.

You sound like a guy who doesn't do his own scouting... you are the guy that gets the invite aren't you? The fact that you don't see anything wrong with sneaking into a partners stand site to beat him to a buck that he has worked hard for, WITHOUT his knowlege, and then lying about how and why he was there, shows something about you also... I think your hunting partners might agree with the OP.

The lying and sneaking BS shouldn't even of happened!!! A true friend and hunting partner (the OP) would not label any deer "his" or any area "his". When me and my buddies head out, we figure out where we all are going to be for the sole reason that we dont shoot each other. If I am not there, I don't tell them to "stay out of my area, and don't touch that beauty 10pt that I have pictures of but have never actually seen". If you want to hunt as an individual, then don't invite anybody to come in.

I agree, buddy should not have lied. But a real friend would not have put him in a position where he felt the need to lie.

It was a douche move, IMHO. The OP trusted his buddy, told him where he was going to hunt, and what for. Had I been the friend and tired of sitting, I would have hunted in any direction but that of my buddy.

If he deliberately hunted his buddy's area, and the deer he mentioned, and lied about it, he's not the kind of fellow I'd care to call a friend - a sneak and a liar. I'd certainly never, ever hunt with him again.

I've hunted the last 30 years with one fellow I trust and respect. Tried hunting with others on the odd occasion, but they proved unworthy. One fellow of southern European heritage shot at anything that flew by, including songbirds. Another who was working a piece of bush fired his shotgun in my direction, fortunately from far enough away to just have the shot fall harmlessly beyond me. First and last time with either.

Real, trustworthy hunting buddies are precious. If you can't trust them 100%, hunt alone.

How in the hell is taking an animal legally "poaching" f:P:2:Dumb statements like that just scream out..........:ban:

Your mistake was showing him where the buck was.
Trust and honour are lacking on his part.
Tell him how you feel about him slipping into your honey hole and shooting the buck you were persuing.

Does nobody read what the OP wrote? Go back and read it again.

I agree. Many are ignoring the fact that they were both headed in opposite directions, yet this "friend" somehow found his way back to the spot the OP was headed, which was shown to the "friend" on a map. He purposely went into the OP's planned hunting site with the intention of killing the buck the OP was after that day. The friend sounds like a self-centered douche.

Some of the guys here missed my point or didn't read all the info. It wasn't that he shot the buck, if he had shot it where he was hunting the first couple of days I would have been happy for him. It was that he made a beeline for the place I was hunting was lied about why he ended up there, that was the betrayal. I just can't stand the lying and also be expected to believe a bull:bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: story.

It is just a deer, isn't it? You make is sound like he doubled back, then hooked up with your wife, then killed the new world record. Is it the new world record????? FS

For me it wouldn't be the deer, but the principle I wouldn't tolerate. I would have had a talk with him right then and there, then let him take the animal out himself as a sign of appreciation for his trustworthiness and friendship. OP, I doubt you will forget this so, just move on. Seems like "kaptonion" loves you buddy , just pm him his contact info so they can set up a backstabbing party at buddy's uncles' hunting camp.............

Unfortunately guys, this is life, it isn't fair but it is reality.

Yes, it was just a deer, there will be way more significant disappointments in life.Be prepared to be thrown under the bus and used.Others will do this without conviction for personal gain whether it for career advancement/financial/### or even just to make themselves look better and you look bad.

Chalk it up as a life lesson and move on , also sometimes it is alright to DTA.
