better buy expensive 1911 to begin with or upgrade cheap one?

Anybody have different opinions of quality of modded norc 1911?

I had my Norc two-tone GM given a 'Norinco prep' makeover at Armco. It cost about $150 [prob. a bit more now] but the trigger is quite decent and it shoots very well. Now I'm looking at get some better sights put on it, and that will cost me $200-300 by the time it's done. So the total cost of my 'custom Norc' will equal that of a lower-end Ruger or Remington 1911. Worth it? I'm satisfied with the process, but all I want is a decent, basic 1911 for casual shooting.

If you're going to start putting bells and whistles on it [ambi safety, beavertail etc.] the cost will keep climbing and you'll put a lot of time and effort into the job. If you do the work yourself, you risk creating more problems than you can fix yourself...remember, you can't swap around 1911 parts the way you can with a Glock or other modern handguns.

IMHO, wait until you know exactly [or as close as possible] what it is you want while saving your money. Don't buy a fancied-up modded pistol unless you perceive a practical need for the modifications. Keep researching until you know the difference between fancy mods and good quality, useful upgrades. You can spend thousands on really cool-looking competition guns and specialized 'tactical' carry guns, that won't end up being any more fun to shoot than a decent stock [or lightly modded like mine] pistol. If you want to learn to tinker with your 1911 yourself, get your videos and tools and, if possible, a mentor who knows what he's doing....then get a cheap 1911 like a Norc to play with.

All my opinion, but if you are really looking for a keeper, that's the path I would follow.

Went to the range today with my brand new Norinco 1911A1 Can Am deal pistol. My buddy brought his Ed Brown, and Dan Wesson 1911's.
It's my first 1911 and it was just as accurate as the other high end brand name pistols. Yes it's not as nice looking as the others but it was on par for accuracy. So either spend a $170 or $2500. It's up to you. Good luck!

Depends on your definition of accuracy. If you're shooting at a tac target from 10 yards any .45 will shoot a 6 inch group or better two handed.

If you want to shoot the ten ring on a bullseye target at 50 yards one handed a norc just won't cut it.

norcs are guns and not toys, they will go bang when you pull the trigger and the bullets will go where you point it.

however that isn't the point. cutting up your hands on the rough finish, that IS a problem. spending money to blank out the slides, having to recut the sight bases for decent sight upgrades, replacing action parts for better trigger all adds up.

norcs have their place, they are a great deal for the money (and on par with alot of guns slight more expensive) BUT comparing one to a 1000+ gun is just deluding yourself.

if you are thinking 45, and you don't just go to the range to spend a box or 2, the cost of ammo within first six months will exceed that of a higher end gun. wouldn't it be nice to have just ammo costs to worry about after you've purchased the gun?

I did cut myself on a couple of sharp edges on the frame of my Norinco 1911. It was easy to take the sharp edge off with a stone though.

Note, that didn't stop me from buying another 1911 + ammo deal from CanadaAmmo last night though. That 10% discount deal was too good to pass up. So now I'll have one Norinco to tinker with and one more as a backup while I shoot my STI Trojan and TargetMaster at the range.

Just get what you want ,,,,, I did all the research to find out what I wanted , spent $1600 on a awesome kimber that everything I could ever want and more .....and its great ,,,,,and I don't regret it .... but I got two more after that and I like them all ....now looking at another 1911 that I want very much .for a total of 4 .
not selling any of them either.
