I am looking for something with same/similar medium round (7.62x39, .223 or other) that costs less than the mini-14's and 30's ($750ish) but higher quality than sks (200ish) (although I expect I will end up with another sks as I haven't heard of anything in between except ak types that I cannot get, - restricted only] Am hoping for the 350-550 range and it must be semi-auto.
any thoughts?
cheers

You won't consider an M14 for $400.00?

Maybe a used Mini 14 to save some dough and shoot a more inexpensive cartridge?

How about a carbine chambered in a handgun cartridge like 9mm or 44 magnum?

What do you want to do with it? Is it the accuracy you are looking for when you say higher quality than an SKS? How about those VZ-58 rifles (around $600) for something different in the 7.62x39 cartridge?

good ideas

I want to stick to medium round (eg. .223) and was just looking at the SU 16 from Kel Tec
Are they sold here?
That would be my ideal?

Not to be a dink but neither of those options are Blk rifles.

I wouldn't run either.

My vote goes for a CZ (non restriced, nice shooter and AK ish looking) or a Norc m-14s/m305 (no experience with them, but the real deal M14 I have shot are fantastic (I just bought a m305)

Depends on what what your initial gun and eventual ammo budgets are. The CZ rifles are great fun! Nice value and can be built up over time to a sweet personal rig, as can the M305.\

The CZ was decent to 200m imho (not bench rested, off hand shots at a gong) The M14 is imho a real machine. A bit heavier and the ammo is way more $$$ but it is a classic and very versitile for everything form Service rifle/sniper matches to larger game hunting.

Save up a few bucks and get a proper rig...

Just my thoughts

Oh and be sure to let us know your choice and POST UP A REVIEW AND PICS please!

Happy gun hunting...Man I love researching and buying/selling guns!

Very last note is to sign up for and participate in the EE here. Great people, deals to be found!

True

Between a mini-14 and sks (I have both), I'd say the sks is actually the more acurate gun.

I have a Russian SKS. It can easily outshoot my friend's Mini 30. My friend also has a Chi Comm SKS, costing $75.00, and it too is far more accurate than his Mini 30.

Frankly, there is no comparison. The SKS is a better rifle. I do not understand why anyone would shell out the big $ for a Ruger when an SKS is cheaper and superior.

Not a black rifle but a lever (winchester marlin - etc) in 30-30 would fit the bill...similar ballistics to the 7.62x39...and available in your price range...also Norc cq-311 is a lot of rifle for $550 at Leverarms...

Shshs...Keep it quiet dammit, I a shopping for an SKS and remarks like these are not helping.

Regarding original question - why don't you shop for surplus semi-auto? Garand and such, you can find awesome shooter in middle range if shop carefully. And much "darker" than CZ VZ or other quazy-military things mentioned above.

good answers guys - thanks

if I can find it in canada, for my costs, su16 would be ideal
if not, may seriously look at used 14's, had two offers (one at max and one at a little over 4 bills)
will also research 58, 858 options
but ultimately predict another sks, (foolishly sold the first one I had)

IMHO a Yugo SKS is a step up from the Norc. I know the barrel isn't chromed so careful cleaning is important is using the Czech ammo. I've had several Norc SKSs and I found they wandered when the barrel got hot, my Yugo doesn't wander. Maybe just lucky.

.223 and 762x39 are very different rounds. Perhaps you want to decide first on what caliber you like better, then it will be easier to select a rifle.
