beware of buying firearms from cabellas

ive pulled the bolt out and used a case and it seems to be working fine

What cartridge is stamped on the bbl?

Seriously. Not to be condescending because crazy things happen. What I'm reading is that the bolt will close without ammo - it just has trouble with ammo in it. The manufacturer claims they test fire all their rifles.

So....what caliber is stamped on the BBL? Is it .223 and you're trying to feed it 22-250? Just a thought!

:D

Could it be the extractor isn't jumping over the rim of the case? Does it just need a bit more force? If that is the case just a little fitting/polishing of the extractor should do it.

Try inserting a case into the bolt face and holding the case in place as best possible and close the bolt.

I am not familiar with this model of rifle so I can't comment for sure about the extractor system.

last month ordered a tc venture 22-50 predater from cabellas it was back ordered finaly came last week , 2days later my dad and i went out to the range when i went to load it the bolt would not close it is like they didn't bore the chamber out enough the rifle is unfireable so i called cabellas and they will not refund only credit toward another fire arm except they are not going to have anymore tc venture predaters and i told them thats what i wanted and they basicaly said heres the # for thompson center see what they will do for you or put your 823.00 dollars toward another gun and thats final so i guess ill call tc monday and see what hapens just wanted to let you guys know to becarefull sometimes the excitment of a new gun can be dissapointing and ill pay full price for a referbished gun and im done with cabellas, do guys think its fair that i have to settle for credit instead of a refund when they sell me a unusable firearm that cannot be exchanged and they still have the privalidge of keeping my working class money let me know your oppinions maybe im crazy thanx trevor.

That has to be the longest sentence on the internet.

On the topic though, I've worked a gun store and our policy was: If unfired (as in defective right out of the box) you could get a full refund within 10 days. After that you we would be happy to send that to the manufacturer on your behalf.

If we were to take back a firearm that a customer had fired and was defective the distributor would have nothing to do with it and we would be stuck with the bill.

when i talked to cabelas i said how can they gaurantee 1" moa if the gun can't be fired.the gun is stamped 22-250, im certanly not a gunsmith but i am around guns all the time and the only thing that this can be is the chamber wasn't bored enough something to do with that, there is no way you could force the bolt its 1/8 to 31/6 from closeing anyway it's 7:20 here in nb and i only have 2.5 hours to dark i have 3 monster bears on cam maybe ones comin tonight later trevor.

Not my experience at all. Bought a Weatherby SA-08 from them and it was here in two weeks. One week being it getting registered and all that. I will definatly buy from them again if they got the gun i want for a good price

From Cabela's Canada website:

If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, we will provide a refund or exchange the item within 90 days* of purchase.

*Our standard return policy does not apply to the following items:

Firearms, black powder guns, ammunition, gunpowders, and primers may not be returned due to safety considerations.

Wholesale Sports:

All returns and exchanges of firearms must have Wholesale Sports prior approval. If discharged, the firearm remains the property of the customer and any issues must be resolved by the manufacturer or a factory-approved warranty depot.

I'm willing to bet there are other gun stores in Canada who have a similar policy.
Hopefully you'll get your issue resolved through the manufacturer.

As a Manitobin who has been to Cabela's Canada and has hear enough stories from other people who shop there, good customer service is not what you are going to find at Cabela's in Winnipeg.

Not saying any other large box store is better either (WSS offered to sell me a Savage when I ordered a Weatherby and they couldn't transfer it from Calgary)

well, i took it to gunsmith he put a factory shell in and it closed.
i guess this gun you realy have to push the bolt in hard, much harder then any of the 9
bolt guns i already have,i had 3 other friends look at the gun and they also weren't willing
to force the bolt, my other venture in the 300 is smooth as silk, this one is incredibly stiff, and awkward to cycle ,anyway it was quite a discusion thanx trevor

Good to see you have found what the problem is.
Now what's the plan to ease up the effort required to close the bolt?
Head space problem?

I for one would not force a firearm into battery and then fire it to see how it does. You had better check the head spacing or you could be pushing the pressures to a dangerous point. It's possibile that the chamber wasn't cut to spec. Or maybe there is something wrong with the bolt. As someone else posted, will an empty chamber if you hook it under the extractor and guide it into place? This may cause probs. with an empty if your chamber is tighter than the gun the empty was fired from. Where you trying to use reloads or factory loads?

Well - Its not clear whether the factory round chambered easily, or whether it required force. If it chambered easily, then you have an acceptable rifle.
Your reloads may not chamber for several reasons:
- not sized enough
- too long a case or cartridge
- brass has been fired in another rifle, with a larger chamber ( at the base). Sizing dies dont work very well in reducing the case dia at the base.

i have been working it and it seems to be easeing up,however i notice that at the top of the bolt handle the blueing is worn, could it be to much camo paint or something in the action,it seems when you shackle the shell in you push hard when the extracter is on the shell you can pull the bolt back and close it normaly,im gonna keep playin wth it.trevor.

It sounds like it is the bolt face. When you do get a round chambered does the round eject normally? Does the round hang up in the bolt? Is there any sign of brass being shaved off of the rim? I have a custom .204 that did the same thing until .001 was removed from the bolt face.

I bought a Rem 700 from cabelas was shipped within a week or two I believe, no real complaints. Although if I had an issue I suppose I'd talk to Remington...

just a little update on my problem with my T/C barrel. spoke with Lyle and T/C will be sending me a new barrel in about 45 days. apperently rifle barrels and shotgun barrels require different export permits  and i have to wait for export permit to clear before they send me a new barrel. at least there a company that backs there product.
