Here is my buck from Sat morning, Nov 11th.

Shot just outside of Iron Bridge, Ont. with a .444 Marlin that I picked up from DizzyDan last month. I put on a set of Ashley sites that I got from Whynot a couple of years ago, and a Limb Saver recoil pad.

One shot to the lungs with a factory Remington 265 gr. round at 40 yds. It managed to run about 200 yds and piled up. Luckily we had snow the night before, because there was not a drop of blood to track it with till it dropped.

Scaled at 227 lbs dressed out for the local big deer contest.

I love how you guys can just throw the whole animal in your truck and take it home! Trying to dress a 1000 pound moose by yourself and then having to pack each 120-130 pound quarter back to the truck is a pain in the ass...

Great looking buck!!

With all due respect, a .444 Marlin with a factory 265gr bullet is not what most people who enjoy "big bullets" thinks about. Correct me if I am wrong, but that bullet was originally designed for the .44 Mag and hence the latter's velocity. I am not suprised that at close range and a high impact velocity the bullet didn't penetrate that large deer.

I would say a .444 handloaded with a +300gr hard cast would be a good start. I don't think the performance of that type of bullet would be comparable to the one used.

Ok, your wrong :D Hornaday created the 265gr especially for the 444 Marlin. I believe your thinking of the Remington 240gr HPs which was about the only offering for the triple 4 until recently.

Thats why Japanese invented ATV's.

Nice buck!

I will be doing some load development on the .444

I would prefer to have full penetration so that I can have a blood trail to track when there is no snow on the ground. I may have lost that one with out the snow to track him. I also shot it in the lungs and do not feel the bullet would have performed as well if I took a shoulder shot.

I will be looking for a tougher bullet in the 265gr to 300gr range.

Here are a couple of pictures of the recovered bullet.
