And all your fingers. Some levers are to small for men with larger hands and forget it with any gloves. When these things came about athstetics wasn't high on the priority list. Rifles were all about function and working men used them daily, usually around the farm or ranch, sometimes on a saddle. Almost always while wearing gloves.
i can't think of a situation where i'd NEED to- i'm more of a stay -in the trees and pick them off from a distance guy-i'm just saying i've done it with my 94 trapper, unloaded- loaded would be UNSAFE
I really like my 1895M but in the winter, using gloves, the lever is just a bit on the small side and I don't have really big mits. Also, when loaded with heavy loads, the recoil does smack my fingers without gloves. I think a larger lever makes a lot of sensen but it doesn't have to be overly large.
You're quite correct. For me, where it really becomes noticeable is shooting my Marlin 1895GS with its straight stock design and using some of the heavier bullet and hotter load combos.
Do they make a large loop for that style/model? I like the rifle, its size, caliber and most other features but in hinde sight, in furure I'd opt for the pistol grip butt stock design and matching lever.
I realise I'm not shooting the same weight of bullet but the recoil effects are nowhere as noticeable shooting my Marlin 444S. I attribute that mainly to the pistol grip and matching curved lever design and perhaps a larger loop lever would be even a further improvement.
