BIG and Slower VS Smaller and Fast

Anything deer/caribou size and not likley to charge or be agressive
I prefer small and fast.
larger game with potential to charge or attack I go
with big heavy bullets.large game requires large bullets.

regards

My collection of rifles suggest I lean toward smallish faster calibres.

I use 95 and 100 grain .243Win, 140 grain .270Win, 160 and 175 grain 7mm Rem Mag, and 250 grain .338 Win Mag (I'm thinking of trying 225 grain TSX as well).

I don't know why I've done this. I don't need long range capability, but then again all of my guns have killed effectively at close range and its always nice to have the potential to stretch things out if necessary.

relatively big and fast I shoot 175 barnes x out of my 7rem mag and pretty sure it will kill anything im shooting at. In heavy bush on moose I would say big and slow 444marlin should do it( your only shooting tops 75 - 100 yards) As for meat shoot them well and look on the bright side if you cant shoot its just less meat to backpack out. Just find some good horns and you wont feel bad if you dont wreck the cape

Big for calibre but not a big calibre per sé.
Fits more into the Smaller & Faster set.
To be honest I'm really wondering what happened to the smaller and medium.
People keep talking about the value of lower recoil, efficient powder use, minimising meat damage and longevity of bbl life and here we are yet again talking about serious powder hogs.

I use whatever bullet works with a particular caliber.
My BPCR rilfes are heavy and slow , but I also shoot 6.5 bullets that move over 3,000FPS.
I hunt the same animals with either type...

I believe in good bullets... there is no need in 2006 to be using a 375 for Big Game... a .270 will kill efficiently with the right modern/premium bullet:eek: .
Even with dangerous game I think that bullet choice is the primary consideration over caliber choice.;)

See... http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28103

I don't know BR, I'd hate to do any bear guarding with only a .270, even if it was loaded with the best bullets in the world.

Here's an interesting little tidbit...."the permanent wound channel is proportionately equal to the expanded diameter of the bullet". A 150 gr premium .270 bullet which performs properly might expand to .60". A 380 gr Rhino at 2300 fps from my .375 can expand to .90" or more, and the added weight means that it has enough momentum to drive this fully expanded bullet deeper into a game animal on the length or right through it broadside. When I line up on a buffalo this summer in Tanzania it had better.

I guess all this puts me on the fence....heavy premium bullets at moderate velocity.

I said Big Game not Dangerous Game.... I agree with everything else you said.

I also agree with ATR about large bullets at high velocity... for long range hunting.;)

I tend to go medium & medium  for deer & moose.
150s-160s at 27-800fps, seems to work very well for me!
Decent shock, & damage & penetration!

Less meat damage, Less recoil, more comfortable to shoot & carry which leads to confidence in your ability :)

But then 300gn Hollow points works real good for varmints out of a .458 cal at about 2400fps too :D
Complete penetration & good shocking power on groundhogs :p

Depends .... ( definitive, eh ? )

Agree with BigRedd in Spades - choose a proper bullet and put it in the right place.

Currently use a 25-06 & 35 Whelen. Little gun for the wide open spaces on deer with 115 gr. Nosler BT's and the 35 in the bush - 220 gr. Speer FP's loaded down for deer, 250 gr. Hornady SP's for moose full tilt for Bullwinkle and Yogi. Last Bambi died at about 60 paces from a 220 "Speer in the Ear".
Killed like lightning and no meat lost !.

Enjoyed reading lots of Keith & O'Connor - Carmichael & Page too !
All were good writer's and made many logical, valid points. Elmer & Jack
both made good money arguing exactly that for years. From my perspective,
Jack had the edge on actual game experiance. Oh to have lived in his time with his resources !!! Actually got to shoot one of his Biesen stocked .270's.
Would have loved to own one of his Mod. 21 - 20gauges !!!
